I live in Detroit. All I see as far as crime is jay-walking, panhandling, and car windows broken on occasion. Crime happens. It happens in every city. It happens in Pontiac, it happens in Canada.
The causes of crime are many, but don't gimme that family values crap. The main factors that lead to high crime rates are systemic to wealth inequity, which is intrinsic to the capitalist economic system. The problem is larger than Detroit, larger than the local government. It's a flawed system that, by definition, requires inequality of wealth. How about you two try to properly identify the problem and do something constructive about it instead of bitching about a specific city with a rough reputation that neither of you happen to live in. Just a thought.
I see you live in Ypsilanti -- its about your web hosting local.

You have to love the black leadership. It all started with Young. The city went down hill the minute Young took office. This is a prime example of black leadership. Just think America will look like Detroit if Obama is elected.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT! I currently live in Detroit. It is messed up but its getting better. Slowly but still it is. The problem is no one knows the GOOD things and the parts of the city that are well kept. But that wouldn't make good headlines 4 the 6pm news I don't see drugs being sold on my block. We throw a block party EVERY summer as a way to get to know our fellow neighbors.Somethings the community can help on. But until our officials take the time to fix DETROIT in it's intirety and not just the parts that bring in money the progress of this community will contiunue on at a very slow rate of progress.

Thas right! Detroit is not all that bad. The media has never done any good for cities that have some problems. This is all we see and we tend to believe the media. WAKE UP! If you think they tell all of the truth then you are in for a big surprise..Everyone expects a change right away. This is the problem with our society. Change takes some time. Especially when it comes to crime and making cities better. Any city!

very sorry to know the city i was born and raised in until about 10 yrs old is such a dangerous place to live in. glad my mother pick us up and moved us out to the big apple. use to love to visit in the late 70s and early 80s its sad to hear and see that its not a safe place for me to want to come back and live with my kids. something i would have wanted to do. really hope the goverment or someone or something try and build the city back up. love detroit but couldnt live there because of the crime that has gone on for years.

Wrong, it is family values. Our economic structure has a lot to so with the moral responsibility which should be taught from parents. If you were raised correctly, well then, no matter how poor you are, you will never rob someone. Second, no one is forcing a person to smoke drugs or drink alcohol. Those are personal choices.

Another problem with Detroit is the culture. The ignorant hip hop and rap culture does not help. It does not promote education or respect for human life. In addition to that, people are too busy playing "victim" all the time. The "victim" role is reinforced by the voting habits of Black people in inner cities, in general.

You should take your own advice. "Standards" is plural and requires a plural verb. So it should read "standards from Detroit ARE the poorest."
No point in correcting someone else's errors with one of your own.

You know what I meant. So it is no point in attacking me because I spoke the truth. Now get lost.

It makes no sense to correct a poster's English when your own grammar/spelling is lacking. If you're going to criticize someone's English, then be more careful with your own language skills. Truth or untruth is beside the point.

Get lost? Aren't you the polite one? Oh well, AA always did have it's share of snobs and elitists.

I am back in this hole called Detroit after being in lovely Ann Arbor since December 2007.

I have not missed the crack heads, the thugs which fill the porches of shabby - looking homes, trashy filled lots and dead decaying smells of animals.

But one person said that Detroit does have it bright spots. I would suggest where Hockeytown is located. That would be in the vicinity of Comerica Park and Ford Field. I can also say that the Outer Drive/Schafer area is pretty kept up. The area where the Detroit mayor lives and the Boston/Edison street area is kept up pretty well too. Just do not venture out too far, or else you will be bombarded by crack heads, thugs, dealers, prostitutes from the Woodward street area and shabby - looking loose Pitt Bulls.

Overall, the city of Detroit became a disaster zone after the 12th Street Riots. From that point on, White Flight and urban decay is what happened.

With the exception of your first paragraph, I could just have easily written this post myself.
I got out of Detroit in 2002 and don't miss living there one bit.
However, I agree with everything else you've said.
The riots in '67 were the beginning of the end for Detroit. No sense repeating your comments, except to say you are right on the money with this post.
