When you flush your toilet it may be going directly int Lake St. Clair too without those workers. The drinking side is not in danger yet. Workers on the sewer and wast management side are protesting.

If the city can save millions by outsourcing those jobs, it stands to reason they may be getting more money than necessary. The plan is to outsource 81% over five years. They needed five years to find outside sources and train them. Would you wish to train people to take your job? If the answer is "no" then this is how the workers feel. So they figure why not strike now while they still wield some power because of knowledge on the job.

These are not brain intensive positions. However, you still need to know where the knobs and switches are located. People off the street would have the sewage flowing down Woodward. That would not be a pretty sight during the Thanksgiving parade.

There may be, but they can't immediately step in and do the work. It has to be gradual to prevent an environmental and safety disaster. This is why the union is trying to catch the city with it's pants down while they still have some power.
