Volunteers give back on Mitzvah Day 2012
As part of an annual metro Detroit tradition, nearly a thousand Jewish volunteers took to the streets of metro Detroit on Christmas Day volunteering as part of Mitzvah Day.

Why must they call it mitzvah day? Cant they just say happy holiday so as not to offend non jews?

Not really as that would be as silly as calling Christmas something else so as not to offend non Christians. Atheists have been successful in eliminating holiday references from public places and so forth. This celebration is being conducted privately so the participants are able to call is what they wish. It's a long standing tradition and many needy people were helped.
