Did anyone reading know Eric Hope who was murdered inside his home at age 12 on 10/23/81? The case is unsolved. He has a page on the denverpost.com website in their cold cases feature.
The boy lived with his divorced mother on the 1200 block of Fairfax Street. He had delivered papers for the Denver Post in the mornings.
At the time of his death he had been in seventh grade at Gove Junior High School.
The denverpost.com feature can be found on a search engine by inserting "Eric Hope," stabbed.

I didn't know him but he went to my school. I had a friend who showed me a note Eric wrote to her, asking her to be his girlfriend.
When he died there was a lot of chatter about how they found his body, but I wasn't sure what to believe. I can't believe they never caught anyone. I remember being scared to think there was someone who tied up a kid and stabbed him to death after torturing him in my own neighborhood. It seemed too horrible to be true, and I think I forgot about it after a while. I really can't believe they never caught anyone.

I went to Gove with Eric and he would hang out and ride his bike around our neighborhood. When he stopped coming around there were all sorts of rumors, we never knew what to believe. It didn't get much press, I always assumed he had just moved away and the story That he was tied to his bed and stabbed over 30 times was made up. My friends said it was mom's boyfriend or an uncle who did it. So disgusting and tragic!

I knew Eric and the news of his death was a horrible shock. We had been best friends for awhile at Park Hill Elementary School in the 4th or 5th grade I think. I don't remember ever going to his house though or meeting his mother. I think he may have come to mine a few times but it's so long ago I barely remember. I only know that for a period of time we hung out a lot playing superheros or something and that we had something in common around single mothers who left us to our own devices. I remember him as being very nice and just a good kid. I left DPS and went to private school and moved across town so we lost touch. It was a couple of years later when another classmate we had in common who also had transferred to the same private school brought the news article in and read it to the class saying that she knew him. I remember that she cried and I remember that I was just in shock and somewhat numb. I also couldn't get the image of what happened to him out of my mind thinking about how terrified he must have been and so alone in his horror. I knew what it was like to be home alone some nights at 12 and being afraid of something bad happening so I related very much to the horror of the situation. I also remember that after learning of his death, for a long time I would talk to him like he was an angel or imaginary friend. I think it helped me cope.
I remember at the time and still now also thinking about the horror, guilt, etc his mother must have felt upon discovering his body especially having not checked on him until morning. Without presuming anything or judging her, it seems so very strange though that she didn't make sure he was home and ok in bed before going to bed herself. It also seems pretty inconceivable that this case received so little media attention and investigations came up with so little.
I hope someone, a detective or journalist or whatever decides to dig into this case again and see if there are any leads that were overlooked or that merit further investigation. It's such a horrible tragedy that this nice good kid and friend of mine could have suffered such a horrible lonely fate and not have any kind of justice served.
