Wow this should stir a little conversation. Does Mrs. Gonzales believe that it is abnormal to be working until midnight as a CPA during tax season? I'm glad to hear that some are paying. Personally I believe it is about 0.01% of the illegal population. Why would anyone pay if America had no idea they were even here? Why did they choose to interview a latino woman, maybe not the best person to interview, need a neutral party.

"Let's see how much they're actually putting into the system," ...and taking out...

Here's a law that needs to be changed...

The IRS is not permitted to share information with immigration agencies, which allows illegal immigrants to pay taxes without fear of being caught and deported.

...I guess any money is green when it comes to the IRS, even money made by people breaking the law.
The next time I hear someone spout about how tough it would be to round 'em up and ship 'em home, I'll point out this article.
We can add this to the list of places the "government" can look for illegals.

I wonder if 9 News,(want's to know, but not really), would actually do a piece on how much illegals bring in versus take out. I wonder if they would dare do the math, talk with bankrupt hospitals, jail officials, people that have been hit by an uninsured illegal, etc...

I would wager that the numbers would astound..

I think it's great that illegal immigrants are paying taxes. It just goes to show that they are making an effort to abide by American laws. Yes, they are here illigally, but they contribute greatly to the American economy.

First, it is illegal to use an I-TIN to work under.
Second, if they pay taxes are they also filing for the earned income credit that gives about $4,000 more back than the amount of taxes actually paid in? EIC is designed to help working poor American parents. It is a drain on the middle class.
Third, most illegal immigrants claim at least 10 dependents. I would be interested to know WHY they are filing taxes on a number it is against the law to use for employment. Are the employers using this number when hiring them?
The working poor are not a benefit to the middle class. The middle class carries them on their backs. The American middle class can only carry so many before America becomes like Mexico and has no more middle class. Mexico has the extremely rich and the extremely poor. Do we want to join them? Is this the legacy you leave your children?

That is surprising. Without knowing the actual number of those that do, however, it's hard to tell how surprising.

Here in Myrtle Beach I have seen quite a few tax return businesses that advertise that they cater to Hispanics. I wonder how many are undocumented.

Any guesses as to how long it takes before this discussion becomes uncivilized?

If they were "making and effort to abide by American laws", they would wait their turn, you know do it the legal way. Wonder how many of these "law abiding" illegals own car insurance. Let 'em "abide" by their own countrys laws. If they don't like them, they need to revolt. IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY!
I will wager that the money they take out of the system is far greater than what they put in. I know for sure that about 2 years ago, the money they shipped home was about 80 billion dollars! Illegal aliens ARE Mexicos second largest form of income!
I would love to see 9 News throw up some REAL numbers based on documented fact as to what the drain on this countrys economy really is.

That's too funny.

Are the illegals also undercutting jobs so US citzens get paid less or out bid? How many hospitals have gone under due to this problem? How about the cost to our school system? How about the cost to the government providing interpreters and biligual literature. What do our tax payers get? Screwed!!

Amen Milton!God rest his genius soul. Hey, maybe the crack Vail undercover narcotics team could join up with Chris Hansen of NBC. Together they could stake out one of these tax preperation offices and put some of these tax paying, illegal, dope smuggling, crime producing trespassers, who by the way snuck into this country to do the job's Americans won't do, on prime time television! Now that would be a show!

Gee, I know a few illegals who file taxes. Of course, they don't pay; just claim the most deductions they can so they can keep getting money from their jackpot babies.

OH it won't take long.. Adolfo will soon show up. That will start it!

Whether or not they pay any taxes, and according to this article, it says they are only paying sales taxes, they are still illegal and they drain the economy by using the healthcare system, etc. The meager contribution is so outweighed by what they take. And so many more of these illegals are being paid cash. They have no reason to pay any taxes.
I hope this woman enjoys staying up till midnight doing taxes for people whom she should be reporting to I.C.E.

You are regretfully uninformed. All credible studies on the issue reveal that illegal immigration takes an expensive toll on communities. This is how California got into billions of dollars of budget deficit. You should educate yourself before you make irresponsible statments like that.

As a foreman collecting documents, I noticed that all the illegal immigrants claimed 10 kids, even the 18 and 19 year olds!If I tried this on my taxes, the IRS would file criminal charges against me, yet the illegals arent even worried.

A little lengthy but worth it if you truly care about this issue...
First, its not that it is illegal to use an ITIN to work under. More accurately...Its not possible to gain employment with an ITIN. ITs not an employment document, and any competent employer will know that. This should answer your question about employers using these I-TINs to hire people.
Second, you are right, the Earned income credit is for the "working poor American Parents". And it remains as such. An ITIN disqualifies a taxpayer from recieveing the earned income credit for themselves or their dependents. I found this on the IRS web site in less than two minutes. Here's the exact quote..."If a primary taxpayer, spouse, or both have ITINs, they are ineligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), even if their dependents have valid SSNs. If the taxpayer and spouse have valid SSNs, only dependents with valid SSNs – not ITINs – qualify to receive EITC."
Third, your question about filing taxes with this number is a great question. My understanding is that this number has nothing to do with employment and everything to do with paying taxes...hence the name...Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. They (Hispanics, Europeans, Asians, Canadiens, whoever) use it to file and pay taxes when they don't have a valid Social Security Card. Obviously it is most common among Hispanics, but race doesn't matter...right?
Finally, I will say that this is definitely a complicated topic and some great points have been made from both perspectives on this story. Regardless of one's "side" on this issue, I applaud those who take a stand when they are educated on the issue and do so with respect. Those who take a side in ignorance or with a hateful approach (regardless of the side they take) are an embarrassment to this great country. Im not sure what the solution to this issue is but it makes me cringe when I sense hate written in some of the words posted about this story. We need to prevent things that are illegal, whatever it may be, but this country wont stay strong if we try to do it with hate or ignorance.

Taxed is right!! There are too many abuses to go into detail. We need to change the laws--we should be fined or jailed for not reporting or relaying information. Illegals have opened the way for terrorism, as well as financial ruin for America.
