Wal-Mart and Hostess: Two Union Stories

By Elizabeth MacDonald

Emac's Bottom Line

Published November 23, 2012

FOXBusiness

Reuters

Wal-Mart (WMT) protests have broken out at dozens of stores across the country, but lost in the commotion is the reality of the work life at Wal-Mart -- and what the Bentonville, Arkansas mega retailer saw happen with unions at Hostess Brands, maker of Twinkies and Ding Dongs, now in bankruptcy liquidation.

It would be a coup for the union movement to get "Big Labor" in the door at the nation's biggest retailer, which employs about as many people as are on active duty in the U.S. military. The union attacks have picked up in intensity as Wal-Mart has moved out of the non-union south to build stores in pro-union cities, such as in the northeast.

The Wal-Mart protests are timed for Black Friday, which Wal-Mart calls the “super bowl of shopping;” but they’ve mostly been a non-event.

Wal-Mart U.S Chief executive Bill Simon said in a statement: "Only 26 protests occurred at stores last night and many of them did not include any Wal-Mart associates,” adding,“We estimate that less than 50 associates participated in the protest nationwide ... about the same number of associates [who] missed their scheduled shift as last year.”

Here’s the reality. The facts are, many workers come looking for jobs at Wal-Mart from heavily unionized grocery stores and supermarkets, where they get paid much less in the way of benefits, and where labor infractions and on-the-job injuries are significant. Wal-Mart has said about a third of the company's hires come from other grocers or places like McDonald's (MCD), in search of better wages and benefits.

Unions’ costly victories foreshadow future struggles

By Chris Stirewalt

Power Play

Published November 20, 2012

FoxNews.com

"$75 million"

-- The estimated cost to unions and their allies of defeating a California ballot measure that would have made it illegal for unions and corporations to use money deducted from an employee’s paycheck for political purposes.

It took the death of Twinkie the Kid to get many Americans to pay attention to the increasingly bitter battle by unions to reverse decades of decline.

But as holiday shoppers hit the stores this week, millions more will be reminded of the conflict as unions and their allies protest outside Wal-Mart stores across the country.

This is not a strike, this is an effort to disrupt business at non-union stores during the busiest shopping time of the year. These flash mobs and protesters are aiming to make Black Friday an even more unhappy occasion for shoppers in hopes of punishing America’s largest retailer for a successful two-decade effort to remain non-unionized.

After losing clout and membership since their peak in the mid-1950s and beset by a host of new challenges from business groups and their conservative allies, big labor was looking for a breakout moment in the Obama era.

But the 2012 election showed organized labor struggling to hold the line and still in search of a game changing moment.

Certainly, unions had a huge victory in helping re-elect President Obama.

Walmart lost a case for not paying over time $4.8 million in back wages and damages, as well as $464,000 in civil penalties.

Plus every year Walmart gets 2.66 billion of tax payers money to support it's employees.

Ridicules statement when I just showed you the actual truth that Walmart pays well .You cant expect to pay 20 bucks an hour for floor sweepers. At least in a right to work state you can change jobs if you arent getting paid what you think you are worth.
Unions ruin companies just like Hostess.
And I dont mean Teamsters. The truck drivers that actually own their own trucks is a different type of union. They actually have something to offer from the beginning in the way of investment. They have a lot more bargaining power and influence to me..Unions protect unskilled workers and put them on skilled worker level jobs and cost millions in mistakes.Unions are nothing more than a scheme to get your money by way of the government .

Exactly what obama wants to do. He wants to crash the economy so that 40 dollar an hour electrician[ and thats cheap] goes down to 20 bucks an hour because African Americans didnt have the opportunities to become electricians..

Obama wants to punish those who paid their way and became successful.
