NRA Goes Silent After Connecticut School Shooting

Where is the NRA?
The nation's largest gun-rights organization — typically outspoken about its positions even after shooting deaths — has gone all but silent since last week's rampage at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school that left 26 people dead, including 20 children.
Its Facebook page has disappeared. It has posted no tweets. It makes no mention of the shooting on its website. None of its leaders hit the media circuit Sunday to promote its support of the Second Amendment right to bear arms as the nation mourns the latest shooting victims and opens a new debate over gun restrictions. On Monday, the NRA offered no rebuttal as 300 anti-gun protesters marched to its Capitol Hill office.
After previous mass shootings — such as in Oregon and Wisconsin — the group was quick to both send its condolences and defend gun owners' constitutional rights, popular among millions of Americans. There's no indication that the National Rifle Association's silence this time is a signal that a change in its ardent opposition to gun restrictions is imminent. Nor has there been any explanation for its absence from the debate thus far.
The NRA, which claims 4.3 million members and is based in Northern Virginia, did not return telephone messages Monday seeking comment.
Its deep-pocketed efforts to oppose gun control laws have proven resilient. Firearms are in a third or more of U.S. households and suspicion runs deep of an overbearing government whenever it proposes expanding federal authority. The argument of gun-rights advocates that firearm ownership is a bedrock freedom as well as a necessary option for self-defense has proved persuasive enough to dampen political enthusiasm for substantial change.
Seldom has the NRA gone so long after a fatal shooting without a public presence. It resumed tweeting just one day after a gunman killed two people and then himself at an Oregon shopping mall last Tuesday, and one day after six people were fatally shot at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August.
The Connecticut shootings occurred three days after the incident in Oregon.
"The NRA's probably doing a good thing by laying low," said Hogan Gidley, a Republican strategist and gun owner who was a top aide to Rick Santorum's presidential bid. "Often after these tragedies, so many look to lay blame on someone, and the NRA is an easy whipping boy for this."
Indeed, since the Connecticut shootings, the NRA has been taunted and criticized at length, vitriol that may have prompted the shuttering of its Facebook page just a day after the association boasted about reaching 1.7 million supporters on the social media network.
Twitter users have been relentless, protesting the organization with hashtags like NoWayNRA.
The NRA has not responded to them. Its last tweets, sent Friday, offered a chance to win an auto flashlight.
Offline, some 300 protesters gathered outside the NRA's lobbying headquarters on Capitol Hill on Monday chanting, "Shame on the NRA" and waving signs declaring "Kill the 2nd Amendment, Not Children" and "Protect Children, Not Guns."
"I had to be here," said Gayle Fleming, 65, a real estate agent from Arlington, Va., saying she was attending her first anti-gun rally. "These were 20 babies. I will be at every rally, will sign every letter, call every congressman going forward."
Retired attorney Kathleen Buffon of Chevy Chase, Md., reflected on earlier mass shootings, saying: "

Thanks real, you've inspired me.

Inspired me to renew my membership in the NRA as I let it lapse several years ago. I encourage all of you to join the NRA now. There's never been a more dire time. Those who wish to take our guns will jump on these recent events as a reason to. That, coupled with our current President and the liberal media, will set things in motion for the most restrictive gun control laws our nation will have ever seen.

These horrible shootings keep taking place, and they keep taking place in gun-fee zones like schools and colleges. I agree we need gun laws...laws which allow the general populace the unrestricted right to carry guns. Laws which allow principals, administrators, teachers, professors, and all free and law abiding citizens the rights protected under the 2nd!

Join the NRA as they need the support right now to help us fight this fight. No one entity can be as helpful in this fight as they can.

The NRA well knows that they are but mere minions compared to the tobacco industry and they too thought they were untouchable.

Cigarettes are now 4X in price, and the rules for using them are stringent and enforced.

Before families could bury their dead children who were slaughtered by a gun lover, other gun lovers in step with the leadership of the NRA positioned themselves to be the victims.

I find that to be disgusting.

MAYBE YOU WILL FIND THIS DISGUSTING
State Senator R.C. Soles (D - NC)

Long time Anti-Gun Advocate State Senator R.C. Soles, 74, shot one of two intruders at his home just outside Tabor City , N.C. about 5 p.m. Sunday, the prosecutor for the politician's home county said.

The intruder, Kyle Blackburn, was taken to a South Carolina hospital, but the injuries were not reported to be life-threatening, according to Rex Gore, district attorney for Columbus, Bladen andBrunswick counties..

The State Bureau of Investigation and Columbus County Sheriff's Department are investigating the shooting, Gore said. Soles, who was not arrested, declined to discuss the incident Sunday evening.

"I am not in a position to talk to you," Soles said by telephone. "I'm right in the middle of an investigation."

The Senator, who has made a career of being against gun ownership for the general public, didn't hesitate to defend himself with his own gun when he believed he was in immediate danger and he was the victim.

In typical hypocritical liberal fashion, the "Do as i say and not as i do" Anti-Gun Activist Lawmaker picked up his gun and took action in what apparently was a self-defense shooting. Why hypocritical you may ask? It is because his long legislative record shows that the actions that he took to protect his family, his own response to a dangerous life threatening situation, are actions that he feels ordinary citizens should not have if they were faced with an identical situation.

It has prompted some to ask if the Senator believes his life and personal safety is more valuable than yours or mine.

But, this is to be expected from those who believe they can run our lives, raise our kids, and protect our families better than we can.

Where ya dig up this old news?

Soles pleaded guilty paid a $1000 fine but got out of a felony conviction. He did not run for reelection and is not a State Senator any more.

Also he is NOT anti-gun

No, I do it because I dislike false info being spread around.

LOL, NO offense taken.

Not so much formal education as self taught. I read at least a few hours every single day. New papers, magazines, books, both fiction and Non fiction. I read pretty much whatever I can get my hands on.Get twenty plus years doing this adds up.

Fact is an email that starts with " Long time Anti-Gun Advocate " who in reality has an "A" rating for his PRO-GUN support from the NRA is nothing but keeping republicans living in there bubble of lies.

Unlike all the "anti-gun nuts" who position themselves to be victims of this shooting. Immediately people started hollering for gun bans because of one idiot.

The NRA didn't jump to any statement, unlike the "anti-gun nuts" that did. So who has an agenda here? Who is trying to take away more of my rights? So, who is really using this murder spree to further their agenda?

Besides, the NRA, even though they may have influence, doesn't make policies or laws. You are attacking an imagined foe. They give their opinions just like you do.

Neither you nor I are a victim in this horrific act of violence. Your claims are unfounded.

You have fallen for the idea that all Democrats are for gun control, wrong.

Its like someone saying all Conservatards are against gun control which is incorrect too.

I believe you have been proven wrong on this one. Jammer set you straight, deal with it.
