What scares me about all this is that now some DA trying to make a name for himself will charge these kids something that will make them register as sex offenders and ruin their lives.

Not sure where you get that I think Colorado is Utopia. I was born here, left here after college looking for something better. I thought Florida would be that, I was very wrong. Came back, am raising my kids here since family is here and our school district is very good. I'll probably move again after the kids are raised and I don't have to worry about schools, crime etc.

After living in Fla and CO, I can tell you, we made the right choice in raising our kids here. My husband was raised in NY and NJ. He has no desire to return there although I think upstate NY is gorgeous and could be convinced to live there.

Just a suggestion -

If a parent determines that their child simply MUST have a cell (for safety, etc), why not get the most BASIC phone and service possible? No Internet, no email, no text messaging. Phone ONLY!

True upstate New York is very nice area.it is a shame to judge an area by its inhabatants. I lived in Evergreen as I said.A little to PC for me. My son and daughter live in Colorado.Son wants to go back to NW NJ his wife wants no part of it.I stay out of it.Well I just enjoy warm weather here in the Gables .We Fish,Dive in the Keys..Be well.

I am a mother of a 13 year old boy. My son has had a cell phone since he was in the 3rd grade. The child only knows what he or she is taught. It all goes back to the parents. every child knows right from wrong and if you as the parent don't keep on them they will think they can do what ever they want.

Yes, I would agree, CJ. Except for the texting thing, though I know it's a sore spot these days. It's really useful and quick- less intrusive than calling. But he was never really into the internet very much, and even in college doesn't have those apps! LOL! And there were always rules for use, and manners, and safety. I never talk on the cell while driving, and I always taught him that. I really do think that like any other privilege, it is an opportunity to learn responsibility. The kids I know are actually more polite and safe with their phones than many of the "grown-ups".:)

Couldn't help butting in when I saw NY. I was born and raised in Upstate & Western NY, and never once went into NY City! Western NY is beautiful, and quiet, and cheap to live in- lots of snow, but I do miss it. I like where I live, but I would love to see the Keys! We were thinking of getting a smaller place with a little more privacy than we have here on Green Mountain, but you don't like Evergreen, Cubano? I like the older neighborhoods, but it sure is getting crowded up there!

Coming at this from a practical point, and some experience - when I drove a semi, we had Qualcomms installed. A Qualcomm is essentially a proprietary satellite based email system. Though my driver-manager objected strenuously, I told him that I would call him occasionally. I explained that "email" does not always convey the true meaning. Sometimes the message is wrong, sometimes the message recieved/percieved is wrong, etc. A three minute phone call can cover more than two hours worth of back and forth messaging. He still didn't like it, and chewed me out every time I called, but the essence of my statement held. We always cleared the air in a couple of minutes. The same would hold true with a child. The call may be intrusive, but less so than the repetetive back and forth messaging. And everybody understands everything immediately. Mis-communications are cleared up on the spot.

In that kind of situation, I agree totally. But there were and are times when I am not sure what Ray is doing, and can just text a quick "call me", or "RUOK?", and not risk interrupting him. I called one time to tell him that his game time had changed, and that he needed to come straight home, and he was talking to the principal! Yikes! Luckily, the principal knew it was me, but it was still an interruption I avoided from then on. We rarely text when there are details- I am not good enough at it for that, it would take me an hour!:)

I know more details than have been released....the picture was sent by the 12-year old girl who was posing nude. She attended Skyview but recently moved to Florida. She sent it to a male Skyview student, who then sent it to a bunch of other 6th grade kids during school hours. The only students possibly being charged are the ones who actively sent the message on, not the ones who received it (since they can't help what was sent to them). The possible charges include child pornography.
