COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. A 5-year-old boy needed 2,000 stitches and two surgeries after he was attacked in his backyard by a pit bull.

The El Paso County Sheriff's office says the pit bull that belongs to the boy's neighbor dug a hole to pass underneath a fence and attack the youngster on Wednesday.

A woman who lives with the boy told the Colorado Springs Gazette his nose will have to be reconstructed and he will need more surgeries in the coming years.

Authorities cited the pit bull's owner with possession of a dangerous dog, a misdemeanor.

The pit bull was taken to the Human Society. Spokeswoman Ann Davenport says a judge will decide whether it should be destroyed.

I have a pitbull and she would never do anything remotely close to this. This goes to show that the way you raise your dog can really make an impact on it's behavior throughout it's entire life. I was told that they found dead cats around the neihborhood from this pitbull as well. That should've been the first sign that the dog was dangerous. If my dog showed signs of aggression or hurt another animal it would definitly make me euthanize her. Luckily for us we've raised her to be a nice dog that enjoys the company of other dogs and people especially little children. Yes this dog should be put to sleep and the owner should get the maxximum penalty(maybe put him to sleep too) Any dog raised the wrong way would be capable of doing this and this poor little boy never deserved this. I agree with the person below "amy" outlawing a certain breed is a form of rasicm and narrow mindedness. Just raise your dog right and the way you would raise a child.

Normally I skip posts with all CAPS and no punctuation but you caught my eye with the irreverent ban on white and black people comment.

Anywho, regarding how your pit bulls lick you, that's their way of tenderizing you before they attack so watch your back or whatever it is they're licking.

Many of these pit bull stories talk about how the dog never bit anyone and was really nice right before they killed a child and/or ripped their face off. This type of dog is unpredictable and should be kept away from children. Or at the very least not left alone with a kid.

The common theme here isn't Pit Bulls. It's kids. Kids are messy and annoying.

The owner is to blame. Not the dog. He should have been checking his fence DAILY and keep him in an enclosed pen for he's away from work.
It sounds like to me since owner felt like he has an enclosed back yard that it's okay to just let him roam around the back yard all day.
I have next door neighbors that are rather nice. He has a Bulldog and another full size dog. I have 5 little dogs that think they can take on these big dogs. We BOTH check our fences DAILY for any signs of digging or damage. That bulldog be damaging that fence quite a bit but were always on top of it. And during the day those dogs stay in a rather large pen.
Ownership is NOT about feeding your dog and leaving them out back.
It's not the dog's fault.

People that want to ban pit bulls simply don't know.

The bad owners need to be banned from any dog ownership if their dog whatever breed it may be attacks another.

With dog ownership comes responsibility. Owners need to invest in their dogs. Not just vet visits but obedience training as well for any problem dogs. A dog owner that gives their dog 5 minutes a day of their time and leaves them out back all day is NOT a dog owner.

For all of the people that automatically assume pitbulls are "wild agressive beast", maybe you should actually meet one before making that assumption. I talked to all of my neighbors before I bought mind, and all of them were nervous about me bringing a "visious" "killer" into the neighborhood. My boy is now grown up and every single one of the nervous neighbors love him. He has never shown any sign of aggression toward anyone or anything. He is one of many great examples of this breed, yet no one cares about the good ones, only about focusing on the very few "bad" ones. Why is it that pitbulls are the only breed called out as "killers"? Maybe because people choose to ignore the other breeds that attack and kill. To those who hate pitbulls because someone told them to, why don't you take the time to seek a responsible owner out and meet a positive member of the breed, instead of focusing on the ones that slip up? Think for yourself, and stop trying to kill dogs that don't deserve to die.

you can never say a dog won't do something like this - once again they are animals - something could trigger agression or an attack and the next moment someone could get bit without warning, without reason or explaination.

i understand this dog breed is normally described with very negative connotations; but the fact of the matter is the owner should have seen their dog was digging a hole under the fence. sadly this could have been stopped before the child was mauled.

That is exactly the the problem. The blame should be place entirely on the owners neglegence. These dogs aren't killers from birth, they are turn into that if not treated fairly. If you were neglected and mistreated you would certainly feel that you needed to do something about it. A dog doesn't have the mental capacity of a hunam, so it can't react in a rational manner. Pitbull's may have the highest bite or attack numbers out of all dog breeds, but when you consider the number of them compared to other it is obvious why. Pitbulls are bred in mass quatities. It is ridiculous how many people are pumping out puppies just to make a dollar. What they don't understand is that they are just hurting the breed. Bullies are a very powerfull dog and only resposible pet owners should be allowed to have them. Instead of blindly fighting for a breed ban, why don't people push for irresponsible owner ban? In most cases it's not the dogs fault, but the way it was raised. People see these dogs as tough and feel they can take a lot of abuse. they are dogs just as any other breed. Being to hard on a any type of dog will push it to it's limit. I truely feel sorry to the child that was harmed, and do feel that that particular dog should be put down and owner should be prosecuted to the maximum of the law, but the breed should not suffer from one dogs wrong doing.

Dogs are just like people - there are certain breeds that are just more prone to violence. From what I've seen, they tend to be drawn together, too... hmmm...

There should be a thread titled "Stupid, irresponsible DOG OWNER witnesses the results of their bad choices"...Or "Irresponsible, ignorant neighbor needs to repair their fence, and close holes dug under it by guests dog"...
Quit making it about the dogs when it's not entirely their fault...

9 out of 10 times in these "attacks", there were warning signs...ALL dogs are agressive when they perceive a threat, even though it may be something insignificant to their human counterparts...
