Even though the individual mandate was a Republican idea in the first place, I tend to agree with the Party’s sudden flip-flop on the issue, but for a very different reason.

I shouldn't have to buy health insurance, because healthcare shouldn't be insured. It should be a government-provided service funded by tax dollars, just like the V.A., schools, police, firemen or armed services. Healthcare shouldn't be any different
As so often with American politics, Thomas Jefferson said it best:“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
But life without health is impossible. Liberty without health is impotent; happiness without health is immaterial.
If you consider Thomas Jefferson to be the ultimate arbiter of democracy that we so often remember him to be, did he not mean those words he wrote declaring to the world our nation’s independence? If he did, I don’t see how he wouldn't agree.

“I think healthcare is a right.” To do this causes the removal of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Why? Because it will then because the burden of the working class to provide this “right”…

If you do in fact “think healthcare is a right.” You are a socialist.

If you do then say so, but don’t pretend you’re for individual freedoms.

While President Obama campaigns hard for Congress to raise taxes on America’s highest earners — insisting on no deal to resolve the looming fiscal crisis without it — there is little evidence to back up his sales pitch that it will go a long way to reducing the nation’s runaway deficit.

In fact, history shows that similar tax hikes resulted in less additional revenue than expected, and other unintended consequences.

Economists point to then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s proposal in April 2010 to increase the marginal tax rate by 10 percent — to 50 percent — on residents earning more than $1 million. As a consequence, the number of people declaring that amount of income or more dropped from 16,000 to 6,000 in the 2010-2011 tax year, according to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the United Kingdom’s tax collection agency.

Before Brown’s proposal, Britain’s wealthiest composed roughly 9 percent of the country’s tax pool. That percentage dropped by half — to roughly 4.4 percent — after the proposal.

Guide to the fiscal crisis -- how bad can it get?

With the non-stop posturing in Washington over the looming fiscal crisis, it's easy to lose sight of what's at stake.

Simply put, D.C. economists say that failing to avert the double-whammy of tax hikes and spending cuts could send the country back into recession. The impact is so devastating because so many areas of the budget and tax policy are affected.

The following is a breakdown of what happens next month if lawmakers fail to reach a deal -- as well as the Democratic and Republican proposals.

Bush-era tax rates

* Without a deal, these tax rates will rise for everybody on Jan. 1. That means a $2,000-a-year hit for a middle-income household, but the rate for every income tax bracket would rise. Taxes would also go up on investment income like capital gains, with that rate rising from 15 percent to 20 percent for most earners. Dividends would be taxed like regular income, as opposed to a flat rate of 15 percent.
* Under the Obama administration alternative plan, the current tax rates would stand for all but the top 2 percent of earners. For households making over $250,000, though, rates would rise, with the top rate going from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. The plan would also raise capital gains and dividends rates -- all told, the administration is looking to raise $960 billion over 10 years this way.
* Under the House Republicans' plan, the current tax rates would be preserved for everybody. However, Republicans propose raising $800 billion over 10 years by limiting deductions for top earners and other tax reform measures.

Pentagon now preparing for massive cuts as fiscal negotiations appear stalled

The Pentagon said Wednesday it is now preparing for billions of dollars in budget cuts should President Obama and congressional Republicans fail to reach an alternative plan by Jan. 1.

The move breaks from earlier statements that no plans were being made – a signal that difficulties reaching a deal are beyond the public stalemate or so-called “political theater” and that Washington officials are bracing for the worst.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said the Office of Management and Budget instructed the department to begin preparing for the roughly $500 billion cuts over the next 10 years – a situation resulting from both sides failing earlier to reach a more measured approach to cutting the country’s roughly $16 trillion deficit.

Little said the department is looking for programs to cut and is developing a plan to announce possible changes to its millions of personnel.

He also repeated that the cuts – known as “sequestration”– would be "devastating” and could result in major changes to national defense strategy, at least in the short term.
