POTSDAM, Germany (Reuters) - Russia and the United States sparred over Kosovo and U.S. missile shield plans on Wednesday, souring a meeting aimed at preparing the ground for next week's Group of Eight summit on the Baltic coast.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke bluntly on disagreements over Kosovo, a major irritant in Russia's relations with the European Union and the United States. He also traded barbs on Lebanon and the missile shield.

"Our positions are diametrically opposed and I don't see any chances of the positions moving any closer together," he told a news conference on Kosovo after the meeting of G8 foreign ministers south of Berlin. Read more

worst idea since the nuclear bomb... why?

1) it won't work
2) it's welfare for defence contractors
3) it will drive invention of new weapons to circumvent the shield.

We would be stronger if we used the $$ to build schools and make USA the info / trech capital of the world. But we will just be the debt capital

The creation of Cold War II will be beneficial to both tyrants. Yheir MIC can provide welfare for the Puppetmasters of both countries. We spent 21,000,000,000,000 on our nuclear deterrent and after the Cold War I ended the gravy train stopped. By creating a pseudo external threat citizens of both countries will rally round the flag and their leaders. This has happened in history many, many times.

No pseudo external threat. According to folks I've talked to in Moscow, enough is enough. They are more than ready to sac themselves to be rid of US aggression. They have loaded up Iran with AA missiles the likes of which have never been seen before....just waiting...while the entire country is mobilizing. Count your moments..Bush is the man who will end it all.
