Last September, 2007, the Otto Warburg medal was awarded to Robert Weinberg of MIT. Here is a book review of one of his books in which he insults the genius scientist Otto Warburg, M.D., Ph.D. from Germany. It was an insult to the great name of Dr. Warburg to award this prize to this undeserving recipient. The medal should be abolished forever.
Enlightenment on the origin of cancer or self-serving propaganda?

Book Review of "Racing to the Beginning of the Road: The Search for the Origin of Cancer" by Robert A. Weinberg, Ph.D., Harmony Books, N.Y., 1996.
Space does not permit an adequate response to the vilification and contempt of a great scientist or the self-serving hypocrisy displayed by this author. The book has zero, documentation or bibliography, and quotations of non-cited references are made. The best one can do with limited space, is hope that the reference list will be published, so the uninformed readers can inform themselves, lest they be duped into believing the rubbish published there.
A chronological discussion is immediately broken in Chapter 2, for a frontal assault on the late Otto Heinrich Warburg, M.D., Ph.D., Nobel Prize, Medicine or Physiology, 1931. He was also nominated for two other Nobel prizes: the first, a "cancer prize" in 1926, for his seminal discovery in 1923, that nearly all cancer cells metabolize via anerobic glycolysis, unfortunately the prize was given to Fibiger (Chapter 4, without any mention that Warburg was also nominated for the prize); and secondly in 1944, for other work (also omitted), but a decree by Hitler prohibited German citizens from receiving Nobel prizes.(7) Since Dr. Warburg died in 1970, and all of his three Nobel Prize Winning Pupils (also omitted), Meyerhof (1922), Krebs(1953) and Theorell (1955) are also gone, along with the great biochemist and colleague, the late Dean Burk, none of whom are even mentioned in the index, it is left for others to defend Warburg against vicious, personal and even religious attacks by those born about the time he was being nominated for a 3rd Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology.(However, it is noted, contrary to many incorrect statements to the contrary, elsewhere, not in the book under review, that Otto Warburg was never actually awarded more than a single Nobel Prize in 1931.(7)).
The quotation at the top of page 15, taken out of context, was part of a long criticism of Sidney Weinhouse (1-4): Here is part of the omitted part which places the statement in its proper context:
"...It is something deeper when Weinhouse dislikes the statement that the shifting of the energy production from the aerobic to the anerobic state is the cause of cancer. He feels that this is far too simple: How can cancer, as mysterious as life itself, be explained by such a simple physicochemical principle?
Yet, this feeling is not justified. The problem of cancer is not to explain life, but to discover the differences between cancer cells and normal growing cells. Fortunately this can be done without knowing what life really is. Imagine two engines, the one being driven by complete and the other by incomplete combustion of coal. A man who knows nothing at all about engines, their structure, and their purpose, may discover the difference. He may, for example,'smell it.' "
Only the last three sentences, beginning with the word "imagine" were included in the text. One wonders how many of Otto Warburg's 500+ research papers Weinberg and his cronies have read, if any?(7)

Book Review of "Racing to the Beginning of the Road: The Search for the Origin of Cancer" by Robert A. Weinberg, Ph.D., Harmony Books, N.Y., 1996.
Continued from above.
In the letter by Burk and Schade (4), they contradict the false innuendo that Warburg's theory and experimental facts on cancer metabolism, had been rejected by the orthodoxy of the day: "...The overwhelming evidence for the occurrence of various forms of respiratory impairment in neoplastic cells, available in some 1000 experimental papers, but denied by Weinhouse, obviously cannot be recapitulated in this note...." One wonders how many of these 1000 papers Weinberg and his cronies have read, if any? This enlightening comment is also included: "....In the words of Isaac Newton (15),'the main Business of Natural Philosophy is to argue from Phaenomena...we must learn from the Phaenomena of Nature what are the Laws and Properties of the Attraction before we enquire the Cause by which the Attraction is perform'd.'"(4)
The late John Dobbins, a renaissance scientist, pupil of the late Linus Pauling, physical chemist, electrical engineer and physicist, also recognized what Warburg discovered (8): "Carcinogens are NOT the primary cause of cancer: they are the indispensable secondary cause. The primary cause was identified as long ago as 1923 by the German biochemist Dr. Otto Warburg... He demonstrated that the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of oxygen in the respiratory chemistry of normal cells by a fermentation of sugar. Growth of cancer cells is a fermentation process which can be initiated only in the relative absence of oxygen..."
According to Weinberg, Otto Warburg was self-serving and narrow-minded, and received special favors from the Third Reich. Some of these statements are contradicted by his Nobel prize winning pupil, Hans Krebs (7). But did not the author and his many cronies listed in the Acknowledgments likely receive special treatment while others risked their lives in Viet Nam or other conflicts? In fact, on page 62 he relates how David Baltimore "...was out in the streets of Cambridge, trying, as he said much later, to foment a new American Revolution." Evidently, he was not over in Viet Nam, was he? Weinberg makes a hypocritical argument seeking to disparage Warburg, but silence for exactly the same ostensible treatment for these hypocrites.
There is also silence about "The Baltimore Case", as described in all its sordid detail by Robert Bell (9) in about 31 pages of thoroughly documented facts. In fact, this may be the "true" reason for ending the narrative in 1986, notwithstanding the comment in the preface. David Baltimore, Nobel Prize, 1975, shared withdrew a publication, and resigned as president of Rockefeller University.(9) Other works on this issue have been published later, after this one, and after publication of the book by Weinberg.(14). The issues mentioned here were not changed or altered from any subsequent events.

The question is, who are the narrow minded ones? Who is telling the truth? Who should look in the mirror? Did the author mention any of the obstructions of the orthodoxy to putting the knowledge gained by the basic research of Dr. Warburg to use for cancer prevention or cancer treatment:(i) the vicious treatment of Max Gerson, M.D., the brilliant and courageous and honest medical doctor from Germany, who pioneered the use of these ideas for treatment, but who was essentially run out of New York, with no trial, hearing or consideration by the medical "profession" of the day in the late 1940's--a "profession" which advertised cigarettes and promoted smoking in their "professional" journals(6); (ii) the obstruction to the study of the use of Hydrazine Sulfate to "block the glycolic pathway" by Joe Gold, M.D. in the 1960's-1980's (6); (iii) the use of this fundamental knowledge for cancer prevention (7,8,11)?
Does Weinberg mention the statement of Alan Aisenberg, M.D., in 1961?(5) "At the present time, it is not possible to say with any assurance that the cancer cell can or cannot be controlled by a selective chemotherapeutic attack on its energy metabolism. However, in view of the urgency of the problem it is most important to avoid a premature relinquishment of any possible fruitful therapeutic approach." It is too bad the orthodoxy sought to obstruct any such therapeutic approaches (6,11, 12) due to their prejudice against, and obvious resentment and jealousy of , "The Greatest Biochemist of the Twentieth Century," and his brilliant experimental and theoretical results, which have obviously fallen on deaf ears.
The largely failed "War on Cancer", which had its 30th anniversary about two years ago, is under the control of "Big Pharma", some of which have provided prizes to the author Weinberg. Although some $30+ billion forced tax dollars and counting, have been spent, still 553,400 persons died in 2001 of cancer, about one person every minute in the United States. Obviously the exaggerated claims for the benefits of the continued study of molecular biology and genetics, as made by the author, possibly lack objectivity from conflicts of interest. It is left to the reader to sort out the truth. However, the government will likely continue to reward failure with more forced or borrowed tax dollars (12)
The Cancer Industry believes cancer is hundreds of diseases, one for every type of cancer. It is as if they took hundreds of combinations for volume, temperature and pressure but never discovered the single gas law linking all three together. Dr. Warburg, on the other hand, along with the thousands of others mentioned above (1,4), proved that cancer is one disease, not hundreds of diseases, and this proof is most certainly not contradicted by anything from the pen of the biology professor in this book. The late Dean Burk, former Founder and Head, Cell Chemistry, National Cancer Institute, even won a scientific prize for his efforts in this regard (6)...and here we are, nearly fifty years later, and people with "advanced" degrees are still seeking to misrepresent the truth to the public! It is obvious that Professor Weinberg and his cronies have never heard of, or deny the existence of, the long recognized law of parsimony; i.e., only the simplest explanations, consistent with the experimental facts, are accepted in science (13) Richard Feynman, Ph.D., Nobel Prize, 1965 shared, one the great physicists, who resigned from the National Academy of Sciences (10) of which Weinberg is a member, was placed on the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger disaster in 1986. His last sentence in the final report: "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled."(10) Tragically, the orthodox cancer "treatment", mistreatment might be a more appropriate word, failed this great scientist and his wife too!(10).

References by Winfield J. Abbe:

"An Unsuccessful Effort to Deny Use of State of Georgia Facilities for Fund Raising by the American Cancer Society" by Winfield J. Abbe, May, 2000 about 100 pages, available at the University of Georgia Library, Athens, Georgia USA. This document describes, among other things, how my wife was nearly killed, not from inflammantory breast cancer, but "treatment", mistreatment might be more appropriate, from dangerous, toxic drugs. And if she had died, the local doctor in charge would have stated on the death certificate: "Cause of Death: Blood Poisoning". But this would have been a lie because it would not have disclosed that the blood poisoning was caused by the approved chemotherapy treatment for this disease, which caused a hole to develop in her colon and permit life threatening bacteria like clostridium septicum to enter her bloodstream, from which most patients die within about 24 hours.

"University Fails to Offer Another Viewpoint" by Winfield J. Abbe published at www.annieappleseedproject.org . This document presents the sordid tale of how the University of Georgia sought to mislead its own students and faculty and the public at large about some of the sordid activities of the American Cancer Society and refused to invite Professor Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. to come to the campus to present the truth of the matter to all.

If you google on "Hypoxia activates telomerase" or "hypoxia induces telomerase" you will get hits to research that proves that at least one of Weinberg's 4 genes he uses to start cancer in many human cells types, is for telomerase. Telomerase switches 76 genes known or suspected to cause cancer/growth. Another 144 genes are also switched but their effects aren't fully studied.(From lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, co-discoverer of telomerase for which she recently won the Lasker Prize)

Blackburn and Ornish had news this week that meditation, exercise, and eating right lengthens telomerase in normal cells increasing their expected lifespan and function.

Perhaps good oxygenation of tissue is essential to preventing cancer (duh). Warburg was right and the world owes him their gratitude, right after science and medicine give him their too late apology.

p53 Regulates Mitochondrial Respiration. S Matoba, J-G Kang, WD Patino, A Wragg, M Boehm, O Gavrilova, PJ Hurley, F Bunz, PM Hwang. Science 2006 16 Jun;312(5780):1650-1653. "The energy that sustains cancer cells is derived preferentially from glycolysis. This metabolic change, the Warburg effect, was one of the first alterations in cancer cells recognized as conferring a survival advantage. Here, we show that p53, one of the most frequently mutated genes in cancers, modulates the balance between the utilization of respiratory and glycolytic pathways. We identify Synthesis of Cytochrome c Oxidase 2 (SCO2) as the downstream mediator of this effect in mice and human cancer cell lines. SCO2 is critical for regulating the cytochrome c oxidase (COX) complex, the major site of oxygen utilization in the eukaryotic cell. Disruption of the SCO2 gene in human cancer cells with wild-type p53 recapitulated the metabolic switch toward glycolysis that is exhibited by p53-deficient cells. That SCO2 couples p53 to mitochondrial respiration provides a possible explanation for the Warburg effect and offers new clues as to how p53 might affect aging and metabolism." Not noted in this abstract is the fact that the E6 protein of oncogenic strains of the human papillomavirus, the polyoma virus large T antigen, the adenovirus E1B 55KD protein, and the X protein of hepatitis B virus (HBx), all bind to the p53 protein and inactivate it.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Virgo

Be careful you don't wind up doing someone else's work today, Virgo. There are all sorts of little tricks to persuade you to take pity on them, from pretending to be ill to making such a hash of everything that you can't bear to watch for a moment longer. Then you are likely to be asked to put in some overtime, at the expense of your social life. Grr.
