Space Shuttle Challenger Breaks Apart (1986)
Seventy-three seconds into its launch, the Space Shuttle Challenger disintegrated, killing everyone on board. Investigators concluded that a failed O-ring, a rubber seal located in the right booster engine, caused a chain reaction that resulted in the external tank's structural failure and the orbiter's ultimate disintegration. The tragic event was captured on film, and many children viewed the launch live because schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe was on board. Why was she on the shuttle?

President Reagan sponsored a contest to send a teacher in space to encourage the kids in science. Thousands of teachers applied, I personally know a young coach back then who was the right size and a very good teacher. He went very high in the selection process. Many experiments were going to be sent to the schools by satillite. It was a very tragic accident caused by freezing weather on the o rings which sealed the booster rockets. Recently, Christa's runner up went on a successful mission on the space shuttle. There are now several science and math high schools around the country in her honor. Three of the top fifteen are in Texas. I think the top high school for the gifted and talented is in Arizona.

These are our best and brightest minds. I think we'll be OK. I work at a private college prep school and those kids are awesome. The students in these schools are not subject to gangs, bullies or other problems. They are allowed to use their talents and run with it.
