Sir Ernest Cassel from Cologne, Germany was the son of Jacob and Amalia Cassel. I was wondering if anyone knows the names of Jacob's brothers. Also, does anyone know the maiden name for Amalia?

The maiden name of the mother of Sir Ernest Cassel was Amalia Rosenheim. She died in 1874. Sir Ernest had a brother named Max and a sister named Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina married an "E. Schönbrun", who abandoned his family, so her children Felix and Anna Isabella took the surname Cassel, which is bourne by many of their descendants. Wilhelmina is an ancestor of the 6th (and present) Marquess Camden.

(I'm just mentioning those I know of; there may well have been other siblings I don't know of.)

My grandmother was Barbara Cassel from Orkney and she told us her grandmother was left in Orkney with her one son after the stock market crash in Europe. Her husband had lost all his money and was off to America to make another. He left on the ship from Orkney, after setting her up in a house, but there is no record of him ever reaching America. We have an old photo that we think we were told was Max Cassel but nobody knows for sure. We know she was German because the story goes that she was so terrified during WW1 that she died of fright when the villages said she would be locked up because she was German.
We would be interested in finding out if this is the same Cassel.

I'm first coming across your response. I sure wish they would have informed me sooner. I'm sorry it has taken so long. Yes, Max died young and Wilhelmina divorced and moved to England and lived with Sir Ernest Cassel with her children and his as well as his granddaughters.
Thank you for the information about Wilhelmina being an ancestor of the 6th (and Present) Marquess Camden.

I'm trying to make the connection between my great grandfather, Herman Cassel, and Jacob and Sir Ernest Cassel. If anyone knows please let me know. Thank you.

I also have a Cassel in my family tree.
My Great Grandmother was Louise Cassel who was married to Siegfried Zielinski.
Louise was a cousin of Ernest Cassel.
One time when he visited Germany he gave Louise
a set of gold earings and a brooch encrusted in blue stones ( Aquamarines I think )My Auntie has passed this set down to me.
I would love to follow the family tree to trace the relationship of the cousins Ernest and Louise.

My apologies to all of you who wrote to me.
Dennis, thank you for Ernest Cassel's Mother's name. I knew that.
Barbara, from what you have told me, it is not the same family.
Suzanne, what was your cousin Louise's parent's names?
My Great grandfather Herman Cassel had to be related to Jacob Cassel, Sir Ernest Cassel's father. I would imagine that Herman Cassel's father was a brother of Jacob Cassel since my grandmother said Jacob was her Uncle or Great Uncle. Would anyone know if Isaac or Isidor Cassel was a brother of Jacob Cassel and whether one of those names would be Herman's's father? I just can't find the connection.

No, this isn't the same family in which I'm familiar from the book Edwina Mountbatten, A Life of Her Own.

My 2nd great grandfather was Jacob Planck and he farmed on Westray, Orkney with his wife Sophia Tedeschi/Teddish. His sister Barbara Planck born 1835 Frankfurt am Main joined him and married a 'Cassells' whose father was manager of the local brewery! I have tried to trace my Planck ancestors in Germany, unsuccessfully!

I am the grandson of Felix and the great grandson of Wlilhelmina (Minna). My knowledge of this side of my family is limited although I have been told that my great grandfather, Minna's husband, was called Louis Schoenbrunn and that she left him for reasons unknown taking her children, one of whom was my grandfather - the other my great Aunt Anna, to England. Interestingly I have my grandfather's German birth certificate describing him as 'Felix Cassel Schoenbrunn'. Needless to say our family dropped the name Schoenbrunn on arrival in England.

Dear Linda, this may be the connection because I do believe that my great grandmothers maiden name was Planck. My father always said that she came from Alsace Lorraine. May be that will help in your search.

I am descended from John, Jacob and Sophia's eldest son. I am looking at a Joseph Plank who died while being transported on a convict's ship for Australia. There are too many loose ends. I don't think this could be Jacob's father. This Joseph was sentenced to death for stealing cloth, scissors, etc., but later the sentence changed to deportation.

Joseph Planck [a shepherd] and Katherine Hardmann were the parents of Jacob, where was Joseph transported from?

My Great Great Grandfather, Isaac was a brother of Jacob Cassel,(who was your Great, Great, Grandfather). Jacob's and Amalia's children were your Great Grandmother and Great Uncle Ernest Cassel.
The following may be helpful:
Son of Moses Joseph Cassel and Gudula Cassel
Husband of Regina Dreydel
Isaac, Jacob Cassel; Bernhard Moses Cassel; Heymann Cassel; Joseph Cassel and Benjamin Cassel
Half brother of Eva Cassel Seelig and Rebecca Cassel
If you can, get hold of the following book, it answers some of your questions that you may have regarding your Great Grandmother, Wilhelmina. It is called, " Edwina Mountbatten" A Life of Her Own and the author is Janet Morgan.
