Now they know hoe people felt about Marshall Fields disappearing here. I have never set foot in Macy;s and I never will. Nothing from a Macys store will ever be allowed in my house.

First, translate "Welcome to Walmart" into German. Then hear it as if it were an order. Beyond that, it's shopping as usual.

What is better for you right now- gym or recess? Why would you make a prison comment to someone just because they don't like Macy's?

Don't sell it to Macy's! They have destroyed department stores long connected to local communities all over this country.

They should be forced to give the department store back to the original owners and their decedents (Pre WWII Holocaust era) or if they are not alive thanks to the ovens of the camps the money ownership should be given to Jewish Old People’s Homes in Germany.

Absolutely... you are missing out on a lot of good stuff we were able to get at Marshall Field's, but that isn't sold by Macy's.

Funny that the writer of this article equates the position Harrod's holds in London and KaDeWa holds in Berlin to that of Macy's in New York.

Macy's is NOTHING like KaDeWa or Harrod's. Both of those stores are known for their distinctive role in providing premium fashion and designer collections to their home cities. They are known for generational traditions and for representing the best of their home culture to the world.

Macy's provides none of these benefits to New York, nor to any of the cities in which Macy's other 800 mid-tier stores are located around the country. Would anyone say that Target or Walmart represents luxury or the best of our culture? Of course not. These US chain stores represent mass merchandise and bargain shopping. At Macy's, however, the only bargains are found when the overpriced goods are deeply discounted in sales.

If any store in America is going to be compared to Harrod's and KaDeWa, that store is clearly Marshall Field's and the role Field's plays in the growth of Chicago's culture, tourism and luxury retailing.

Note that in Berlin, the thought of KaDeWa being turned into an outlet of a discount chain store isn't even considered a possibility, just as we in Chicago never believed that Macy's would be so arrogant and irrational as to replace the more successful Marshall Field's when it was acquired 3 years ago. We all see how terribly that decision has proven to be for Macy's, for customers, for employees, for tourism and for Chicago, so let's hope for Berlin's sake that the buyer of KaDeWa doesn't make the same mistake that Macy's made in Chicago.

Bergdorf Goodman might be more comparable in New York.

Also, to be like happened to Marshall Fields, you'd not only have to buy the store but then completely replace it -- which doesn't seem to be in the cards for KaDeWe, at least according to this article.

For the Germans out there, it'd be like Karstadt buying out KaDeWe and then replacing KaDeWe on KuDam with a Karstadt store. That's what happened in Chicago with Macy's and Marshall Fields.

wie Schade!(what a pity!)
when i lived in west berlin, shopping comprised of 2 parts---cigarettes & alcohol from the hard-currency store in alexanderplatz, east berlin, then the elegant KaDeWe back in the west!totalausverkauf (sale!) really meant something there!
until i read your article,i was blissfully unaware of the 'aryanisation' of the store by the nazis---yet another horror from that shameful era!
