I'm gonna try to help this conversation with accurate facts. I applied for prem tech Dec. 3 2011. Took the test within 1 week and passed. Went for RJP 1 week later and everything they say is correct they basically tell you how much the job sucks before you take it. I also made it pass that portion. 4 days before christmas I was contacted by HR and asked if I was still interested. HR scheduled me for my physical and drug screen within 48 hrs. Next on Jan 3rd I was contacted again by HR and told they were just waiting on my drug screen results. The following day was contacted again and offered the job to start on Jan 6. I did accept.

Thanks,
My background is in cable and I'm pretty sure my experience and background has everything to do with it. The location is south Louisiana. Unfortunately I kinda know what I'm gettin myself into with the workload and pay like everyone else on here has stated. My previous employer actually paid less for the same wrk with very little overtime and I was there for over 5 yrs. So for me this is a promotion if u will. Lookin forward to the overtime, get it while you can is what I always say cause one day it will be gone. Got a question for you milwaukee pt, how long have you been a pt?

For those of you trying to get into this position known as the U-Verse Premises Technician, you may want to rethink your decision(s). I tried for 1 year to get hired on, into this position, after 1 year of waiting & taking the 2 required tests they finally called my number. The job is a great job, the people you meet (customers) are all great people too. Sure you have your customers that can be extremely irritated but you have to put yourself in there shoes. When they call into the customer support line, which is the same line we as techs use in the field for support, the customer can be on the phone, on hold for probably 30-45 minutes before actually talking to someone or getting there issue addressed, I'd be irritated also.
The position here in Jacksonville, FL started me out at $15 an hour, I have been a PT for a 1 1/2 years now, I make $17.50 an hour now. Like I said the job is gravy, nothing difficult about the work, you may have to crawl up under a house or creep through some tight attics, but it's a gravy job.
The biggest thing about this position is the ridiculous shit that you have to do in your daily routines, along with installing U-Verse for the customer(s). See At&T is ALL about the numbers game, efficiency, productivity and utilization. They also have the old repeat numbers figured into the quality part of your daily numbers also. To clarify, quality is based on the amount of repeats you have through the month. If I do a repair or an installation and another tech comes behind me within 10 days I get a repeat, either a fault of my own work, or even if a piece of equipment fails I get the repeat. Let me repeat that, even if the equipment, i.e., modem, set top box or dvr fails, I get the repeat. Like I said this affects my quality numbers, not the fact that I did a complete professional install for the customer, nice neat work with cables or whatever, PT's take it in the ass all the time. What is crazy is that everywhere else in the good old USA the PT's fall into the CWA union, but not here in the Southeast. We have no support, no protection, no nothing. It is what it is, you are the main link between AT&T and the customer, but all the shit rolls down to the PT. So if you have another option as for employment you may want to seek it. Oh yeah, if you fail a customer survey you will be suspended for a couple of days with NO pay. I will post more stuff about this position later, or if you want to know more just let me know.

I'd imagine there are a lot of similarities, but some differences as far as the region you are in. I just got a job as prem tech in STL. Any St. Louis prem techs out there with any insight?

Hello guys, this is a follow up to my first post found back a page.
In the midwest region we are CWA union. We climb poles, hang NIDs, and run the jumpers in the cross boxes, this results in higher pay than regions where the PT is not responsible for that work.
Intro to what to expect at school
Week 1: Physical: climb, climb, climb. Firt 6 feet, then 12 feet, final 18 feet and manuever around the pole left and right. Carry and climb ladders up to 70 lbs. There are I believe 7 pass/fail tests in this week alone. This is for many the hardest week.
Week 2: Safety...I dont like spiders and snakes and that isn't what it takes to...remember that song. This is about the dangers you may be exposed to in additional to first aid and CPR classes plus defensive driving. Both are pass/fail.
Week 3: Observation...you go to a garage and spend the week riding with techs and observing. This is your chance to see what is expected and if this what YOU want to do for employment. No p/f
Week 4: Exterior wiring, how to use basic hand and power tool, hanging drops from poles, hanging the NIDs, punch down blocks, stripping wire, etc.
Week 5: Interior wiring, using mock up homes how to read a work order, fish wire thru a wall, install coax and cat 5 wiring, installing and testing ends on cables, hook up equipment. Friday is test day given 2.5 hours to do a complete job that must be neat and work. Failure is being escorted out the building.
Week 6: Product Demo Week: Learn the internet and Uverse TV package and give an up to 1 hour ORAL presentation of product and remote control operations. This is pass /fail
Week 7: Voice over internet (new phone service,
iNID, and web based training. Read alot, take a test after each section. Must pass test, good news not pass/fail you can redo any section you have problems with.
Week 8,9 Supervised Rides: Placed with a senior tech you dispatch and do the work under their guidance. This is a hit or miss, I was fortunate to have some great guys who took an interest in my success, some of my classmates said they were with guys who just sat in the truck and told them to go do their best.
Next time: making the fleet, sink or swim?

How are thing in district3 for th prem techs? Got to be better than Comcast, now that place, which I'm employed with now is somewhere I would not send my worst enemy. You have to take test to advance, even if you knownhow to do the job. They word the questions so you don't understand them.they want to go from comm tech 2 to comm tech 4 quick so they don't have give a decent raise. So its shouldn't be to bad at&t.

Training wages are 12.25 to 16.33 Top wage is 20.01
For those hired on the bottom it takes 5 years to reach the top, 2 years if hired at top of training wage based on education and experience. New contract this April, will cause those to change. Before people start asking questions about the new contract go back starting around page 60 of this forum concerning the last contract in 2009. Bet the questions and answers will be similar. Will be making next post around the 14,15th.
