Jeffrey Gedmin: Engage Iran -- on behalf of the Iranian people

It's odd to hear commentators quibble about the 'irregularities' in last Friday's Iranian elections.

Excellent column. Yes, the Iranian government is repressive, and the society is definitely not free. But it is clear that the people want freedom, they want liberalization, they want westernization (to a certain extent). If we turn away from Iran, it strengthens the hand of the government. Calls for sanctions are misguided - they will hurt the people we most want to help, and allow the mullahs to say, "See? The est is against us. You need us - only we can protect you from them."

We must engage, because that is the only way we can hold their feet to the fire.
