Now why can't something like this occur in El Paso or Las Cruces?

They have tried doing something like this in El Paso but we did not support it. It was called the tour of el paso. It starts of with grass roots racing and then leads into something bigger. But there was not enough support and racers involved in this race.

The Tour of the Gila in and around Silver City drew Lance Armstrong among other world class riders to the last race earlier this year.
There are also number of local cycling events every year with top quality regional and national level riders.

The 12 Hours of El Paso Mountain Bike Race is in October - check out the info here:

This is Chuck, the pedicab guy. I was neutral support for Vuelta Chihuahua 2006. This race is an awesome opportunity for the community to watch and experience. I was surprised out how fast those guys can ride down steep mountainous roads in the Copper Canyon. Even then there were good El Pasoans racing, but now, THE BIGS DOGS ARE HERE!!!

Kudos on Chihuahua for their effort, something that Texas and local governments can take some notes from. HINT, HINT

Vuelta Chihuahua is Awesome.

We have cyclists, we just don't have the support. Why, because we do not believe in ourselves as a whole. We tend to says, " they won't support us".

So we believe it. Here you go.

I will put $5000.00 if you can get enough people to do this ride.

Start on Wheeling Drive, up Scenic Drive and towards Mesa, Down Restler, up Trans, Down Trans, toward Mc Canyon. End with big party, band, musice and cheers. Have vendors, booths, wine and beer sales, shirt sales, or even go the other way around and into Tom Mays Park. It would be great.
