"It will be the money shot," said Steven Jonsson, a bicycle marketer who has served on the event's local organizing committee. "You can't buy that kind of exposure."

And then the cameras will go downtown and see -- what? Boarded-up store fronts.

ANd the inquisitive among the reporters (and spectators) will venture into Beach Flats and see -- what? A gang-infested barrio.

All this primping is lipstick on a pig. Why bother with such boosterism when the product you have to sell is so troubled, so imperfect? Put your effort into improving the city for the residents, Santa Cruz. Stop denying what is really happening here.

Hot so Great....It's a bike race buddy, relax, people will have a great time on Tuesday. You, on the other hand, can stay home and complain on your keyboard.

Remember when they told us last year that 15,000-20,000 people would be flocking to Santa Cruz for the event? How many really came? Maybe 3000.

Granted there will be tourist money to be made, but it is at the expense of the rest of the community. Just like the bike paths and bike lanes -When will the cyclists start paying their share ?
I'd rather see them making 50 laps around Laguna Seca, Fort Ord
Maybe, we should allow the Sports Cars of America to race in the streets as well or Go Carts.
Enough is enough

Are you a shut-in by chance? I swear all the nasty, negative comments like this must come from people who are stuck at home for some reason (agoraphobia?!) and vent their misery through a useless forum. No one cares. Move to Detroit. Then you'll really have something to complain about!

Not to be a party-pooper, but why have two lead articles in the Sentinel about a bike race been featured for the last 2 to 3 days? Is the Santa Cruz public not informed enough after one article?

Or is this just another example of "Panem et Circensus" (Bread and Circuses) to distract people from the deadly serious issues that Cruzans and Californians are facing?

I too enjoy a diversion ... but it seems like the Sentinel is confusing the dessert with the main course of "news".

Just one man's opinion.

the bikes wont ride between your house and the 7-Eleven. You can still get your Doritos.

Why on earth are they going down Western Drive? They will kill themselves on that road. It is bad enough with a car - but if you are not familiar with it and it's tree roots going across and raising up the road - look out!

A valid concern.. but they repaired the road enough to be safe for the cyclists to come through and don't forget that these guys are professional, they have ridden in every condition and on every kind of bad road imaginable, they will be fine.

I plan to stand right by the railroad tracks at the end because I figure there will be some epic crashes when the bikes get caught in the tracks.
