Analysis: Cuba watching for signs of a breakthrough with Obama

Full story: The Morning Call

Amid two wars and an economic crisis, Cuba policy hardly ranks at the top of President Barack Obama 's long agenda.

What I don't understand is WHY it's somehow a huge priority to end the trade embargo with Cuba. What do they have that we need? I know they'd love to have access to American markets, but there's nothing that we gain from it. Nothing. They have dollar signs in our eyes and we're supposed to feel that we're making up for a "shameful deed" of not trading with a certain country?

It's important because it makes us look hypocritical to the rest of the world. We are supposedly the champions of freedom, yet just like it is illegal for Cuban citizens to travel to the U.S. it is illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba. Whether they have a point or not, it gives foreign governments who looking for an excuse to criticize the U.S., an argument that Americans are no more free than Cubans. I believe it hurts our foreign policy much greater most people we realize.

After all the Castro brothers and Obama both believe in controlling the economy from the presidents office and suppressing dissent. It is a match made in heaven.

The United States Embargo against Cuba was a commercial, economic, and financial embargo imposed on the Castro government on February 7, 1962. It was a stupid political blunder by the idolizes JFK. A blunder that was inexplicably continued by Democrats and then Republicans.

There is NO Purpose served by the Embargo other than Retribution against Fidel.

I agree, the embargo must be lifted but let's do it one step at a time. Let's lift the traveling restrctions first and see how Castro's dictatorship reacts!

It is NOT illegal for Americans to travel to Cuba. The AIRLINES are forbidden to provide transport directly from the U.S. to Cuba - but the American citizen is free to fly to Mexico or some other destination, and then fly from there to Cuba. Your passport will be stamped and U.S. Customs will see that when you re-enter the country. Of course they will search your bags for cigars and other such "contraband"... but you will not be arrested.

I have no idea why this myth continues to perpetuate.

There are charter flights out of Miami to Havana.(I am not certain if the flights from NYC and LA still function due to the current economic slump.) It is not illegal to travel to Cuba!!! It is illegal to spend money in Cuba!!! Thus, any U.S. citizen wishing to travel to Cuba legally must secure a Cuba Travel License from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and its Office of Foreign Assets Control. This license is currently issued only for religious, humnanitarin, educational, or medical trips.

How about lifting the embargos against Cuba AFTER they pay us back for the plantations, hotels, machinery and leases they nationalized when your hero, Fidel, stole with his 'revolution'.

Or maybe your like our new president, just give it all away.
