I think that we should be aloud to keep our schools because that is the livelihood of our town. Our school has brought us great joy in winnng the state championships in football over the years. I am proud to say that I did graduate from this school and this school has taught me a lot therefore we should be allowed to keep our schools. Our town would be empty without our school. I love Wise County. Born and raised a Blue Knight, but the truth is the consolidating of the school system will provide the young adults of Wise County a more rounded education to prepare them for the real world. The other thing that needs to be pointed out..the largest reason so many oppose this consolidation is due to the sports programs. Boo Hoo....sports is not what should be important, it should be the education. Yes, it will cut back the number of atheltes in Wise County, but it will give those true atheltes a better chance of being seen and receiving scholarships. With larger schools, it means more money to provide the type of books, computers, and etc that the students truly need to receive a well round education. Think more about the type of education they will be receiving and less about who will be sitting the bench.

Unfortunately the Va. State Legislature has voted to reduce the education budget for next year by ten per cent. This will force people to accept many cutbacks in education. Consolidation will no doubt be one way local school systems will be forced to deal with these cutbacks. As fas as sports programs go, it is sad when traditions die, but they are also the birth of new traditions. I view the impact there not so much in the terms of competition as the life's lessons that are learned from these programs. The debate over the quality of education in larger or smaller schools will never be resolved. It is a matter of personal opinion.

What about the safety of the children that has to be transported to a school further away? Especially in the winter. 58 between Coeburn and St. Paul and 23 between wise and pound are constantly having bad wrecks when it rains and when it snows. What about when the snow comes in quick and they wait till last minute to call school out and the roads are slick how will the transport the students. with me it is more of a safety concern of safe transportation than losing sports. In Coeburn they have had buses slide out of the road trying to get students home in the winter, because they wait till last minute to call school out. I would not want my child traveling between st. Paul and Coeburn or between pound and wise everyday on a bus. consolidate these schools and watch and see how many accidents with buses and other vehicles we will see.

This is so true... I was coming through there from TN one day around 2:00. It was pouring the snow and I got behind a bus that was all over the road... Safety of the children should be the first priority...

If you are the Harold that complains regularly at the school board meetings, i don't want to listen to you as you have no credibility based on previous statements made.
