Shame on the fire department for this! Giving KIDs, of all things, guns and money as rewards for the mass murder of helpless squirrels. ITS BABY SEASON can you not have a heart? Think of all the babies left behind that will die, the lucky ones MAY find the shelter of a rehabber. RIP to the beautiful squirrels that will lost today in Holley.

There was at least 1 money offer I tried to present to the fire department of $5000.00 to stop this! Im sure theres more and many facebook pagelike Squirrels of the World raising funds and awarness to stop but again the SLAM marches on despite the offers...However check out the FB sits and read how the USFD (United Supporters of the fire department)STOPPED funding Holley over this yes Holley refuses to STOP the SLAM....

Hunting is a Holley way of life. If you don't like it too bad. Squirrels are used for their meat and their pelts, its not like they are being killed and then tossed in the gutter. If NYS says you can harvest 6 in one day, then they are obviously way overpopulated. No matter if its a contest or not people are out everyday shooting them, or they are being slaughtered in the roads by cars. They are RODENTS, thats right, rats with fluffy tails. And kids grow up using them as target practice so DEAL! If you don't like it then get the hell out of our town!

Shame on you Holley NY. I am glad I don't live there, it is now known as the animal killer town. People who kill animals and give money and guns to young people is why this country is as it is. It makes me so sad that this world is as it is because of people that have no heart where animals and people are concern. Greed, corporate, money lies, cheaters are getting out of hand. Holley NY, I am sorry your even a part of America.

On the contrary. Holley is a village that refused to be bullied and who stood up for our Constitutions of the United States of America. Fighting terrorism from within. Proud to be an American. Yeehaw!

I am glad you don't live in Holley also. What upset me the most is people that are not from Holley sticking their nose in Holley's affairs. I am sure you would not like it if the people of Holley tried to push there oppinions (that you didn't agree with)on you. I am also not sorry that you are part of America I'm just sorry that, you just have an obvious ignorance to the Holley hunting.

This disgusting and barbaric event sickens me and many, many others here in the UK. It's no wonder you have so much gun crime over there when you're teaching children to maim and kill for the fun of it.

I'll remember that when I'm in the UK and remember the horses that were illegally captured and slowly killed just to make hamburger for the Big Mac chains.

It's not even a question of eating the kill. It's that deriving pleasure from killing an animal displays a major mental defect in that individual.

Well then stay in your fake world and like it. by the way thank you for the publicity the fd has never had such a turn out. By the way this contest was never really about the squirrels, more of a social event, but you can bet thousands of squirrels will be taken due to the publicity.

Living in a rural area is no excuse for unnecessarily killing animals. Hunting because you are hungry and have nothing else to eat may be excusable but, for fun? Or, even worse, to raise money? Why not do a contest on the best house-building skills, or other edifying pursuit. Or, if you must shoot an arm, then use inanimate objects not, living beings that feel, pain, fear and have as much right to life and live on the land as of all of us. If they did not, then, they would not have been created. This planet is not just for humans. And we should honor it and all living things in it. Your contest is a backward, primitive, blood-thirsty pursuit with no values. What kind of example is that to children? At a time when the country is still coming out of the horror of Newtown?

A national call to protect the minds and upbringing of your children should be placed. This is a rich country and there is no need for you to go out hunting because you are not starving!!!. There is so much to learn about this world and this country. Do something constructive with your free time.

SQUIRREL SLAM INVOKES OUR BARBARIAN INSTINCT.
HOLLEY FIRE DEPARTMENT IS VIOLENT AND DEBAUCHED.
The slaughtering of squirrels to fund-raise is disconcerting and provocative. And what is most disturbing are children involved in pulling the trigger killing to fund-raise. The pleasure is in the kill, the thrill and the torture. Furthermore; the catch is the prize, a win for the Holley Fire Department. The act of killing desensitizes and true emotion evolves into cruelty. And when cruelty is engaged then one becomes a slave to society. What happens to the senses when someone experiences the sight, sound, smell, and touch before and after the kill? In the modern world, we are desensitized and lost connection with our senses. And do we really understand the word, "feeling," not emotionalism, not thrills, nor excitement, but the quality of perception, the quality of hearing, listening, and feeling. When was the last time we heard a bird sing and the rustle of a leaf? And how do we feel when we glimpse at the studded-gold-rays of the Sun. Equally important, how do we perceive a squirrel, his dance, his wit, his swiftness, and thick coat and stretched-out tail? And to feel deeply, penetratingly to see the beauty is very difficult for most of us because we have lost the capacity to be truly human. The state of ecstasy and joy cannot be experienced unless we put aside the illusion of pleasure. And during the squirrel-slam watch every thought, feeling, and emotion when you hold the gun and touch the trigger. And look very deep at the dancing squirrels and everything that nature has created. Can you pull the trigger and take a life that you have not designed and created in the utmost beauty? Holley Fire Department would do well to set an example and offer an alternative to fund-raise. I propose to draw landscapes of the squirrel habitat. In addition, write songs about squirrels, sketch squirrels, and sway like a squirrel. And equally important, the engagement not be in the kill but in celebrating life and embrace the squirrel as our own. The Holley Fire Department can set an example of good stewardship and become a friend of animals. The investment of befriending is great because of the insight into sensitivity and that all life has value. This will mitigate future violence and people who are in tune rarely engage in crime.

I attended the squirrel slam this evening and thanks to all the media coverage, there were over twice as many entries as there normally are. If anything I think that more hunters turned out to not only support the fire department but to support hunting in general. This area of New York State has a strong tradition of hunting and you either understand it or you don't. No amount of stone throwing, name calling or slandering will change that. The Holley Fire Department's funding raising event was using the respect for that tradition to raise needed funds. I am a hunting parent, as is my brother and many of my friends. We take our children hunting and despite what some may think, teaching your child to harvest an animal is not the same as desensitizing them to violence. We do not put a gun in their hands and tell them to go kill something. We walk with them, spend time with them in the woods and teach them the finality and responsibility of their actions. It is a more bonding thing than some may ever know. It is so much different that letting your kid plop down in front of the TV and perform limitless acts of violence against humanity. I am very happy to see families hunting and was very happy to see them this evening.
