I have some advice for the young Watauga man planning a future in politics. First, if you get elected to public office, serve your term and go back home. There is no doubt our founding fathers intended for us to do our duty for one term only. I just wish the Constitution had made this abundantly clear. It would also have helped if this great document had forbade anyone from retiring from public office on a pension. I have grown cynical in my seventy years of living. I believe the average politician's chief concern is getting re-elected. In my 20s I too dreamed of getting elected to high office. To that end I earned four degrees: a B.S., an M.A., a J.D., and a LLM. However, life experiences and a growing cynicism led me to abandon all political ambitions. I also was a member of Young Democrats in my undergraduate days. However, upon going to work for a living, I found the Democrat party opposed in principal for what I believe in. I believe in personal responsibility, minimum government interference in our lives, and some system of taxation that isn't punitive for people who wish to get ahead. I am also soured on the Republican Party. I consider them close to 90 percent bad, while I view the Democrat party as 99 percent bad. Also, I now believe I would not have made a truly good politician. I would have been too subject to flattery and cajolery. In summary, if you can avoid pitfalls such as thinking government should provide all the answers, I wish you the best. However, if you would turn out to be like most national politicians (SOCIALISTS!), then for the good of America, I hope you fail.
