I saw the list of the Best of the Best for 2014 and was aghast at the results. The Watauga Democrat and Mountain Times are SO out of touch with the county, as exhibited by the list.

For instance, T-mobile got 3rd place for cell phone service and they don't even have shops or towers in this area (they use roaming agreements). Marble Slab Creamery got 3rd place as an ice cream shop and they've been closed for months. Farmers Backside got 2nd best ski/snowboard shop and they've been closed for years (Expressions took their spot years ago). VPC Builders got first and Matt Vincent got 2nd under the best builder category, and they are one and the same company.

Several of the other winners are so far off from being the best that they are laughable. I snorted at some of the incompetent individuals who won awards. I don't work in any of the categories, but I know many of the people and the winners made me scratch my head.

I'm afraid this is just another reason why the Democrat and especially the Mountain Times have become irrelevant. I don't even bother to pick them up anymore and I used to not miss a copy. I miss the old days when the Mountain Times was the local source for all news and contained excellent reporting. Those days are gone....
