Police said a head-on collision on Route 88 in Washington County left five people injured, including three children riding in a minivan with their father.

The crash occurred at around 1:10 p.m. near the intersection of Route 88 and Mingo Church Road in Union. Chief John Hartman of the Southwest Regional Police Department said the 34-year-old father, a Monongahela man, was driving a Chevrolet minivan down Route 88 when he suddenly veered into oncoming traffic, striking a Dodge Neon head-on.

The man told police he "blacked out" while behind the wheel.

The driver of the minivan was taken to Jefferson Memorial with cuts and bruises. Two of the children were taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for cuts, bruises and leg injures and a third was flown to same hospital with leg injuries, Chief Hartman said.

The other driver, a 64-year-old woman from Monongahela, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian with a chest injury.

Two of the children in the minivan were 8 and 15, but he did not have an age for the third.

Chief Hartman said he did not anticipate any charges would be filed in the case, though authorities had still not pinpointed the cause of the crash.

The minivan driver had no prior medical history to explain his black out, the chief said.
