i do not believe rodney heemstra is completely innocent but i also do not believe he is guilty of murder. you cannot tell me that a man is going to roll out of bed in the morning that has never been in trouble with the law before and shoot his neighbor.hawkeye iowa

He shot and killed the man, over a parcel of land. If not murder, then what?

I THINK SOMETIMES A PERSON IS TORMENTED EVERY DAY AND THREATENED CONSTANTLY THEY CAN BE PUSHED TOO FAR AND DO THINGS THAT ARE BEYOND REASON.KNOWING RODNEY I KNOW IF HE HAD IT TO DO OVER HE WOULD NOT HAVE DID WHAT HE DID.ITS JUST NOT THE PERSON I HAVE KNOWN ALL HIS LIFE.HE IS A GOOD PERSON THAT WAS PUSHED TOO FAR.

He didn't shoot a man over a parcel of land. It was the land that cuased their contention. In fact, he owned the land and had nothing to gain from removing Lyon from the picture. Once you understand that, the only conclusion is that he shot Lyon because of the type of interations he an Lyon were having. Lyon had a mental illness and Heemstra didn't know how to handle a bi-polar bully

Anyone defending Heemstra does NOT know the truth behind this story. Why was Heemstra on Lyons' property when the murder occured? Why did he need a gun to "defend" himself when all he had to do was get in his truck and drive away? Why did he change his story on the witness stand and tell people that Lyon was the aggressor and in his confession to the police that NEVER came up. Think about it. It does not matter what words were spoken between the two men - and Lyon DID NOT have a mental illness - Heemstra had no business on Lyons' property that morning, and there is no justifacation for killing him and then DRAGGING the body and dumping it in a well. Anyone defending Heemstra should think about this situation as if it happened to your friend or family member.

Have you followed this at all. Rodney said in court under oath that he would do it again.

I now the family personally and Mr.Lyon was mentally sick and had threatened rodney several times.I do not rem.him saying he would do it again. But I do rem.him saying he was sorry and that he was pushed to the limit. This happens all the time.Im not condoning Rodneys actions but if you had been threatened would you not be afraid of a man who had threatened your life?I believe you would.

Heemstra had NO reason to be on the property at ANY time UNTIL the Lyon lease was up. Duh? He was sneaking around like a slimey scumbag in the man's way when he could have AVOIDED any confrontations PERIOD. The lease was going to end and allow Heemstra SOLE owner of the property. He was lowdown to shut off the water for the cattle. The straw that breaks the camel's back is when the Dateline host asks Heemstra if he every apologized to the Lyon family...he looks puzzled and responds with "For?" Oh, and by the way..why was NONE of the so called incidents against Heemstra ever documented to the Police Dept.? He was REALLY scared of Tom wasn't he? We only get this liar's version. Poor Tom..dead at 52 due to blatant ignorance and stupidity.

First I must mention that I do not know either family on a personal level.

I watched this story on Dateline and would never have convicted Heemstra in the first place. Certainly, Heemstra killed Lyon, however; it is obvious he snapped after years of abuse from Lyon.

I have never been in trouble with the law in my life, but I will say it could have happened to any "normal" human being that had, had enough! My best wishes to Heemstra and his family.

Rod Heemstra is guilty of murder in the first degree based on what he did after he shot Tom Lyon. He tied the lifeless body to the hitch/frame on the back of his truck and drug it down the road tearing not only clothing from the corpse, but flesh also. He then went home, showered, and ran errands with his wife. He also hid the gun on one of his other farms in his so called empire and burned the clothes he had been wearing when he murdered Tom Lyon in cold blood. I do not wish Rod Heemstra the best, but I do wish his family the best in dealing with a cold-blooded son, husband, and father in the future. As for Tom Lyon's family, I do wish you the best and I hope you can put this behind you eventually and chersih memories you have of Tom.

You defenders are crazy. All locals and especially local farmers know the situation. Heemstra has always been a prick and kept trying to sabotage things on the land that Tom had leased because he was pissed he had to wait out Tom's lease. He had no business or reason to ever be around Tom, but he is an instigator. All of his actions, and NOT Tom's, up to that day, lead to the dreadful final result, therefore, he is a MURDERER.

First of all, just because you know the family doesn't mean you know all of the facts! To answer your question you posted. If I were threatened with death, you better believe I would never get out of a vehicle near the person that threatened me, I would call the authorities right away. I would never try and handle it myself, let alone get out of the vehicle for a confrontation if this was "ongoing". Tell me this: If you were threatened by someone or you were scared by thier presence A: Would you go back to your vehicle, get in and drive away and go get help? or B: Go back to your vehicle, get a gun, walk over to the person, shoot them and then hide thier body? Hmmm, kinda gives you something to ponder doesn't it. He chose to walk back and chose to grab that gun! No one can speak for Tom, he will never get his chance to tell his side of what happened that day. All you have is one side of a story that ending in death that has destroyed many peoples lives! God knows the truth.

All you people who think Heemstra was right in killing Lyons are morons. It was not self-defense. He murdered him. I think he should be dead. I think he should be in prison for the rest of his life. Even if he was threatened, then Lyons still did not do anything wrong because he did not carry out the threat. If Heemstra felt so afraid that Lyons was going to do something really bad to him, then Heemstra could have called the police.

Money, greed, pride... all of these things lead to the root of all evil. It is really a sad situation, but I do believe there was fault on both sides. I wonder if this man will change his life and some good will come out of such an evil act. Love your neighbor as yourself... good words to ponder in this scenerio.

it's funny this dosen't happen more often, a lot of these big land owners just can't wait to see their neighbors go broke so they can add to their empire's of dirt

was this simply self defense? or was it something more. i knew the family. yes, problems were between the two men. but i beleive that it was in self defense. rodney wasnt the guy to go and shoot someone over land. rodney was being threatened! anyone that gets threatednd has some sort of defense. rodney always carried a rifle with him. he hardley ever left the house without it.
