Why say I have rights, when I really don't?

My boyfriend and I were pulled over recently (a Sat evening, after midnight, coming home from friends after grilling/watching movie). My BF was driving on an expired license. The VCS that pulled us over, had my BF exit the vehicle, patted him down, and asked some questions. Since I am the registered owner of the vehicle, the VCS came to the window of the truck, and asked my permission to search the vehicle. I asked why, he said (as he shrugged his shoulders) "If there's nothing to find, what's the problem?" I said "I never said there was a problem, I asked why you felt the need to search?" We played cat and mouse back a forth a few more times, but I held my ground and denied the search. He then proceeded to call in a K9 unit, and ran the dog around the truck. He forced the dog inside the cab of the truck (claiming the dog "indicated" something was inside), the whole time the dog trying to get OUT of the vehicle, only to be blocked by his trainer. The dog even tried to climb out the BACK window of the truck. The dog was removed and taken back to the sheriff car, and the two VCS's proceeded to search my truck, inside and out, for a good 30 minutes, only to come up empty handed!

My question is, why do they said I have a right to refuse the search, only to call in a K9 and search anyway! We were also never told WHY we were pulled over....I'm feeling like we had quite of few of our rights violated.

quick addition: the wrote my BF two citations - one for driving on exp license, and one for not having license in his possession and we were told we were free to go.
