Authorities in Vance County say a deputy was killed in the line of duty on Saturday.

Vance County Deputy Sheriff Brandon Scott Coker, 27, was killed after running off Nutbush Road between NC 39 North and Satterwhite Point Road and striking a tree shortly after 10 p.m. Police say they believed that Deputy Coker was attempting to intercept a vehicle that had been described over his police radio as a reckless driver.

I went to Riverside High with him. We were in a computer class together. He was a great friend. I feel so sorry for his wife and family. We are losing so many young people here lately that it is so scary to even drive to the store. You are in my thoughts and prayers!
