At first, I felt the sheriff's office was acting reasonably after hearing about the suit on KMUD news that a large lawsuit had been filed. "Go with extreme caution" should have been their motto, I thought.
I now realize after thinking and pondering my own experiences with having to call police-- why were the law enforcement officers not either in the vicinity or able to get there quickly by helicopter, if necessary? I live in an area of Arcata where we see a lot of the development going on. It is somewhat separated from the downtown and more elite hilly areas, but I think its lovely, with cow pastures around. Although its in city limits, we have little representation, and all the council members live far away. Police may just call a tenant who has a booming stereo, or check with other tenants and not drive the 3 miles. They have not wanted to "come out here" in late night in past years. There are lots of disabled, lots of older folks, especially native Americans with Potowa just across the freeway, who live in complexes just east of the Valley West shopping center. Police may have been taking the hint from City Council. This is the area, off by itself, where fast food resturants are welcome. Although it is only 5 minutes from the police station, they have in the past said, "we will send someone OUT THERE". Finally a police officer was assigned to this area, and it is getting more consideration. But he is not really out here for most of his work time, just available to come out and oversee things. Perhaps the police just go where the money and power is, serving more elite areas first.

Here we go again .This case is only one of so many problems in Trinity County yes there needs to be more law enforcement but who pays for it the few of us that work and pay taxes in the county pay for most of the services the growers use .This case is a grower on grower murder .The growers say they moved here to take advantage and exploit the fact that this is a poor county that does not have a lot of law enforcement .Bottom line the law enforcement we have is what the few of us that work traditional jobs can afford. The black market is bigger then the traditional economy in Trinity county and its going to be a huge problem.
