2 die in Pa. motorcycle crash on Route 660

WELLSBORO – Two Canadians died this morning when the motorcycle they were riding left wet Route 660 in Delmar Township and ejected them into a utility pole.

Tioga County Deputy Coroner Steve Daugherty said the man and woman died of massive blunt-force injuries they suffered when they struck the utility pole on 660, about 200 yards east of Airport Road.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of family members in Ontario.

Emergency workers said the couple was riding a Honda Interceptor motorcycle east on 660, heading for the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, one of a group of five motorcycles. On a left curve in steady rain, the motorcycle went out of control and traveled down the north berm for several hundred feet.

It hit an embankment, launching the motorcycle driver and rider into the air, and they struck a utility pole about halfway between top and bottom, suffering fatal injuries.

The motorcycle did not hit the pole but struck a mailbox and continued down 660 for more than 50 feet, coming to rest in the roadway.

Wellsboro firefighters and ambulance crews responded to the 9:58 a.m. crash and remained on the scene for two hours.

Police released the remains of the victims to Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Mansfield. Daugherty did not order an autopsy.
