It is evident that Mr. Hughes does not grasp the concept of what a Volunteer Fire Department is. A volunteer organization that works for the good of the people and uses the contributions that the public feels it deserves for a level of service it desires. As well as being accountable of the funding they recieve either in contributions or from city and county taxpayers. The Bryson City Fire Department is a volunteer based organization, which the city has recognized that is a necessity since they are a municipality and somewhat support it with funds, and since the builing houses county trucks, the county subsidizes equipment expenses. However, since there is no fire tax and Swain County is under NO obligation to provide fire protection to the residents (taxpayers) of Swain County, Alarka and West Swain VOLUNTEER Fire Departments were organized to provide the service that is not mandated or required to be provided by Swain County. With all of that said, the real question here is: Why does Mr. Hughes is against having additional fire department equipment and resources availible for the citizens of Swain County and Bryson City, by saying more or less they (BCVFD) are the only ones that can do the job. Do they think that no one else in the county is capable of being trained to state certifications and do the job because they want to??

First of all to Muller,
County only owns one of the firetrucks that is in the BCFD station. Close to 80% of BCFD's calls are outside the county so the county should assist in the fundings. Mr Hughes never said that his department was the only one that could complete the job. And if i am correct during his news interview he commented on the other departments personel. You my friend have no idea what you are talking about!!!

And for Slippy,
Dont worry if you need the fire department they will be there for you. They dont judge people becausse they dont like them or because of something they said or did unlike you. And you have no firefighting background or you would understand why Mr. Hughes left Alarka and West Swain out of the big wild fires. Somebody has to cover the remainingn county and would you not much rather have a department that knows the area responding if your house was on fire? Or would you rather have a department from cashiers who know where veru litlle if any of the roads are at trying to find their way to a fire?

Why not work out a unified fire safety program with all dept rolled into one agency, with a professional, experienced administrator at the head, this could result in a gradual move from all volunteer to a quasi profssinal dept, no one has to give up turf as the whole of Swain would be the turf!
