Can I ask a stupid question? Isn't the park already accessible to the poor, elderly, and handicapped? How is this going to be any different from what is already in place? Am I missing something?
Lets see if I can help you out with your questions....yes the park is accessible in limited areas, and not by the handicapped(bathrooms don't count!). The poor can go where ever they want to but the elderly cannot. Trails are not maintained enough for the elderly much less the healthy. Free boat rides are only given once a year for those wanting to get to areas that the road would access better. It would be nice to go on my schedule not someone elses. I want to be able to go all year long. I want to see what it looks like when it snows, to be where my forefathers stood and farmed and raised their families. I am not just talking about white folks either....I am talking about my Native Heritage also!

Access to the region is naturaly limiting due to the Lake, which some folks just cant afford boats to cross the Lake. Then there is the drastic elevation changes and rocky trails which deters the elderly and handicapped, this road would negate the Lake crossing and get people to the Dam from the North Shore safely. Remember the old roads in the area were used for every day travel by all the people who lived there, but this new road would acomodate anyone who wants to view this area of the Park.

As stated earlier in another story, the road is a dead issue, the power structure that supports the Parks lack of enthusiasm for the road is too well organized and besides that Shuler is in and the purse strings of the Interior are no longer controlled by road friendly people. The main thrust should be to keep the cash settlement out of the hands of Swain puppets and puppeteers, basicaly the same group that deceived the people of Swain in the election before this last one. those people represent at least one hundred years of total controlover Swain County. They rule without fear of ever having to pay for any wrong doing past, present or future.

Well, heck, let's four-lane it so we can have even faster access to that part of the park. Having paved access to remote wilderness areas is what America is all about!
Can we build an alternate route from North Carolina into Cades Cove while we're at it? I hate dealing with that pesky traffic in Pigeon Forge.
Give it another 10 years and the parkway will be 4-lane because it is too small now for all the traffic.

Soon, there will only be the Joyce Kilmer Park left. Wilderness, now that is a joke.

Well you can do that anytime you want to, right? It would just be on your own dime and not a "free ride."

All those who take those free rides are tax payers too, not only do they pay taxes to aasist all the National PArks, they do it without complaint.
