NO it's YOUR stubborness and the GREED of people like you, Lenny Winchester, Luke Hyde, J McKenney, Glenn Jones,... to name a few... it's YOUR STUBBORNESS and GREED which hurts the next generation and generations to come. The Road would bring in more jobs and more money, look at the DEIS report... yet people like you prefer a few politicians stuff their pockets ...not for the good of the people.
Well, I'm not hiding behind a pseudonym and calling people names. My name is real, and I'm not ashamed to stand behind what I say. I'm not hiding.
If you really look at the DEIS, you'll find that it says that a cash settlement's effects on the economy cannot be determined because it would depend on how the money was used. Invested, the principal would generate approximately $2.5 million dollars a year.....forever. If used properly, we could attract businesses that will provide well-paying jobs for Swain County...not the minimum wage, low skill jobs that a road would provide.
I'm not sure if you missed the point intentionally or accidentally. It's pointless to argue what benefits the road may provide because there is zero chance it will be built. All the parties, your Senator, your Congressman, your Governor, your Commissioners, in fact most of the citizens of Swain County are in agreement. Take the settlement.

The DEIS study has major, major flaws in it. The economic impact is preposterously overstated due to the methodology used in the report.

People have reasons not to trust the present leadership in Swain to handle the money.

It may be overstated but not as greatly as the projected cost to build the road.

What settlement???? swain hasn't been offered any money. The 16 million was appropriated for further construction & repairs to the northshore road.there's no new contract. If there was money to replace the road it should be the cost of the road plus interest for 64 years. It would need to be up front money also. All of it...Thats what happens when you don't pay your bills in a timely manner.!!!!

The few jobs that would be created by a settlement would not go to qualified people - but to family members of politicians. Build the road!!!!

Did you even read the story that started this discussion? The Senate Appropriations Committee, who controls the budget process, voted to release the remainder of the $16 million as part compensation for the fact that the road will not be built. The process is already in motion; the pro-road folk can raise hell as long as they want, practice character assassination, try to dig up dirt all they wish. The road will still not be built. I read a few posters who actually said "the road is dead, now let's keep the county from getting the money". What insanity is that? Or you could call it stupid, ignorant, asinine, pig-headed, whatever. Hurting your children and grand-children because you didn't get your precious road is selfish beyond belief. How do you fit that into your vaunted "mountain values"?

Obviously TNTEGRITY means nothing to you, Just Money.Do you think these 3 commissioners care about our children & grandchildren? You need to wise up..I don't trust people that say one thing & do another. They are liers. All liers will have their part of the lake of fire.Thats not "mountain values" but God's Values. In the end thats all that will matter. The Government Lied to the hard-working taxpayers of swain county .We are as good as any other Americans. We have the 1943 agreement & Will fight forever if we need to to have it fulfilled. If the government paid swain 6 million& promised to get more later surely you wouldn't believe that!!!So its really a matter of selling out for 6 million .Who believes PROMISES after 64 years ?If your family didn't loose their home & the only way of life they knew & suffered & sacrificed because of this action then you need to BUTT OUT !

Well, let's get a couple of things straight. My parents' people were forced off of Aquone when Nantahala Lake was created. Same way your people were forced off the North Shore. So you don't have any special claim over loss of land and the way of life they knew. Your people were compensated the same way that my people were. So the only difference is that the people of Swain County,*not* the people who were relocated, were promised a road to replace flooded NC 288. The North Shore people have no special claim over the road, the land, or the contract, as was proven when the Supreme Court ruled that they could not sue the government, because the contract was not made with them, it was made with the people of Swain County.
I have also seen the affidavit from the officials who promised verbally that the road would be built which would allow access to the cemeteries. Unfortunately,(and I truly feel sympathy for those affected) verbal promises are not worth the paper they are not written on.
As far as the money goes, I have been called greedy, the politicians will line their pockets, ect. The proposed settlement will guarentee that the principal monies ($52 million) will be put in the bank and only a vote by 3/4 (or 2/3...I can't remember) of all the registered voters of Swain COunty could take any of that money out. You can't get that many voters to come to the polls, let alone agree to take any money out. So only the interest can be used for any purpose. So tell me again, how am I or anyone else going to line our pockets with the money?
I know most of the Commissioners personally. All 5 are good people who believe in helping the future generations. They disagree on how to do that. But the settlement supporters have every bit as much integrity as the road supporters. They are not going to burn in hell because they support a settlement. They simply realize that the road will never be built, so let's get what we can out of this broken promise, and put that money to use to help all the people of Swain County, not just the people of the North Shore Road Association.

I think the main difference is there was a Legal Contract in the case of the North Short Road people whereas with your family, there was no contract. Also, the ones forced off the North Shore were paid the 2nd lowest amount in history for their land..."take it or leave it" "sell or be put in jail for hindering the war effort." and acreage was measured by the air. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that acreage measured from the air in the mountains comes down to a lot less acreage than if measured by ground. No comparison between what they went thru and what your parents went through. Bet there is a road to your family cemetery too, isn't there? hummm.
I believe God when he says, "Revenge is Mine, saith the Lord, I will repay." You money loving road opponents can fool some people but God in heaven sees what is going on. Shame on you all! If you read the Bible it tells about honesty, love for your neighbor, not stealing. Supposedly one commissioner was told by God that he should change his position on voting to allow a hearing. The problem is he needs to test the Spirit. True, the road opponents won't go to hell for opposing the road... that's not why people go to hell. But they sure are playing around with evil. Love of money is the root of all evil. That's in Timothy.
Verbal agreements not worth anything? Maybe not to you. God heard what happened and I don't see in the Good Book that he's okay with lying suddenly. Nor with greed. Nor with dishonesty.
Shame that people like you would sell our heritage for a tiny amount. Show how little you value it.
