Any day without Charles Taylor representing WNC is a good day.

Shuler cut off funds garnered by Taylor and diverted to other states by the millions of dollars funds that would have assisted many universities, hospitals and infrastructures in the 11 th dist of WNC.

You fail to mention that Swain was paid 400,000 in the 1940's and there is somewhat of a mystery as to the fate of those funds.
The US apparently intended to build the road as indicated by the the start that was made in the 1960's.

I think the money should have been more. However Swain County has an asset that no other area has, that asset is wilderness and it is getting to be in short supply, the tourist and their money will come, as the old adage goes "be careful of what you wish for you might get it"

I say close Cades Cove loop forever and make it a wilderness again, lets see if Tennessee Senator is ready to do that, of course not, tourist dollars come from roads not trails. Blue Ridge Parkway is the best example of this, NO roads = No Tourist
I hike , but it contributes nothing to Swain County. YOU need that road for more interest on this side of the park.

Maybe they should close all the things on the TN side and put it back into "Wilderness Area" then BUILD THE NORTH SHORE ROAD... since Lamar is so interested in shutting down things on the NC side of the park. Heath needs to move back to TN and run for Congress there as he is representing his interests in Tennesseee/Real Estate companies he owns etc. He sure isn't representing the people of NC! Shame on Luke Hyde, Mr. Winchester, Glenn Jones, and the others who are so greedy for money they will sell our heritage for so little.

SIGHHHHHHHHHHHH What a limp wristed response! I live in central NC and NC history tells me that most of the people who live in the mountains have had it hard. BUILD THE ROAD! If US 441 can bring good things, why not the North Shore Road? I personally would like to see jobs and money continually flow into this area! The Cherokees who live near 441 are supporting the North Shore Road. BUILD THE ROAD!

Do you know what "K I S S" stand for? It means "Keep It Simple Sir", therefore, build the road as promised. Stop complicating the matters and coming up with the "well" excuses, convenience, easy way out, and insensitive respect to Swain county people. Build the road!

Interesting Elizabeth Dole has been in the news lately; going to "get the rest of the money"
where has she been the last years? must be near re-election time. The mountains have heard little from her for so long.
Surely there is a democrat that could be a real senator for NC!

Dole believed the over pricing developed by the Park Service and did not listen to the right people, hopefully this disgraceful pay off will be vetoed and she will not be reelected!!

The settlement is to repay the amount Swain County had to pay to retire the road bonds for NC288 (flooded) which the town of Proctor failed to pay. It bankrupted Swain County. The $52 million represents the current day value of those bonds, when interest is added. The settlement is for ALL citizens of Swain County. The displaced settlers were paid 60 years ago, whether it was fair or not.

It's easy to say that if you don't live here. But it really doesn't matter. The fact is, the road is dead. It cannot and will never be built. It's time to move on and exercise one of the two options left...take the settlement. The only other option is that nothing will happen. If the road supporters keep on raising hell, that may happen. That would cheat the citizens of Swain County, their kids, and the future of ANY benefit from this broken promise. I wonder if this may not be what the road supporters want. "I can't have what I want, therefore you can't have what you want, either".....or "I'll show you, I'll hurt me". It's a shame that their stubborness hurts their kids.

In regard to Mr Breedlove"s comments I say" was your family one of the 1375 living on the northshore ?You might think 52 million is a fair price for ones Heritage but I don't.If you really had the best interest of Swain County in mind you would be demanding the road be built! The DEIS says if the money was invested properly {yeah right }it could bring $140,000 per year to the county. But if the road was built it would bring $14,270,000 per year.A road cannot be mismanaged, misplaced.or stole...it's there forever, benefiting our children long after we are gone.Do you actually trust these people to manage money that won't even allow the public to come before them to have a discussion on the road issue. The voters of this county cast their ballot for them {maybe} and they turned a deaf ear ! That will not be forgotten.

You forget that Swain was paid $400,000.00 in the 1943 Agreement to retire the road bonds and that sum is strangely unnaccounted for and thats the reason the County had to continue to pay. Why should we trust a much larger sum to our "leaders" when they wont allow public hearing on the issue in front of the Commission? Why should we trust a Commissioner who is is under investigation for alleged wrongs in the last election? Why should we trust Commissioners who allowed a huge overpayment for land for the Public Schools without Public input? Why should we trust Commisioneers who have cut the newly elected sherriff income? Do we really have any idea who is pulling the strings here? Its a repeat of the same old pattern of a party in power for so long that it believes it can do whatever it wants in order to remain in control of the purse strings.

Oh she's already in the democrat's section haven't you noticed? She's with them. We sure aren't going to work for her re-election next time! She has shown her true colors

NO it's YOUR stubborness and the GREED of people like you, Lenny Winchester, Luke Hyde, J McKenney, Glenn Jones,... to name a few... it's YOUR STUBBORNESS and GREED which hurts the next generation and generations to come. The Road would bring in more jobs and more money, look at the DEIS report... yet people like you prefer a few politicians stuff their pockets ...not for the good of the people.
