For 6 billion dollars why can't we get an addition to the nuclear plant and get cleaner air to boot? Nuclear not coal!!!

There is no such thing as "clean coal". There is less filthy coal. It's sort of like being less pregnant. Coal is last century's answer, I thought we were moving forward. ODEC needs to grow a pair and build another nuke plant. And stop making every plant a one off design, it builds massive cost into each plant. Sit down with other electical suppliers and design "Generic Nuke Plant Type A" and build a bunch of them. There is a lesson we can learn from the French.

And with the Northwest prevailing winds here on the peninsula,,, guess who is down wind of the smoke stacks. Now we have both nuclear contamination from an accident or terrorism and a coal fired plant to contaminate our lungs. I would prefer a clean nuclear plant with adequate safety and security.

Folks, Surry has to do something to gain revenue to pay all the doggone welfare cases they have. Its either this or the OLF. We need jobs to get people off welfare, and produce a better community. Dendron was once a boomtown for the railroad, I think they can handle it again. If you want air quality, move to Montana. Nuclear is not a bad option, but apparently not a good enough one at this time. Personally, I prefer the OLF. Grew up near Air Force bases and Airborne Express, miss the noise.

Obama has stated and coal facility will become bankrupt while he is in office.

So what is the real reason someone wants to build a coal power station next to a nuclear one?

Applying today for another Coal Fired Power Plant is like the auto industry proposing a bigger better SUV to get them back on course. Both approaches will lead the industry back to Washington looking for a bailout.

All new CFPPs should be denied permits until carbon sequestration is a fact and not the fiction that AmericasPower and others are promoting under the misnomer "Clean Coal". Regulate CO2 emissions as a pollutant and coal no longer has any economical incentive and the playing filed for alternatives is leveled.

We are paying the price difference for coal, just not in our power bills. These are costs that will long outlast the power or the power stations that resulted in these hidden costs.

The EPA's internal Appeals Board just recently (a few weeks ago) said exactly what you're advocating: that they have an pbligation to regulate CO2 and that they're going to do it. this effectively stops the process while they get all the regulatory kinks worked out. Yippee!!

On another note, I just want everyone to know that this power plant will NOT happen. Not on my watch. I will fight it the entire way, and I hope you all will join me.

Another coal-fired power plant is not needed in this world of global consequences. The EPA has established a goal to "achieve all cost-effective energy efficiency" by 2025 which could meet 50% or more of the expected electrical load growth in the United States, easily minimizing the need for a new power plant. The Department of Energy is currently exploring ways to integrate 20% wind energy by 2030, so with enormous wind potential in the Chesapeake Bay and minimal visual impact for those concerned with aesthetics, we could easily and dramatically increase our renewable portfolio here in Virginia. Furthermore, the cost of solar panels WILL become cheaper than coal sometime in the next 10 years, more likely sooner with subsidies coming. Finally to help promote renewable energy production in the state we need to pass legislation to allow for communities to invest in cooperative renewable projects for which they receive can a fixed rate from Dominion. These are real solutions to our coal addiction and will provide both significant economic and communal growth, and can totally avoid the nuclear question. Dominion is a state-run monopoly meaning they have to listen to us, so we have an obligation to tell them that these are the solutions we want and pass legislation to do just that.

Surry County and the surrounding areas need this plant, not just for the jobs, but for the infastructure it brings. This is a shot in the arm for the Economy and gets people off welfare. Todays technolgy allows for the clean burning of Coal, check with the people who live near Clover power station in South Boston Va. An while you are talking to them, ask them about what it did for their local economy.
