Thank God..........I have seen these "POOR" people showing off their wealth for years, charging people money to access the lake, and making more than enough money off renting cottages to pay their Taxes. What a SCAM ! Choke on your filthy money

Hi, I am sorry to hear of this outcome. We rented for years at Trout Lake and tried to buy a small cottage there (in the 250,000 dollar range), but the taxes would have been 10,000 per year (we spoke to the tax assessor to determine this). Therefore, we didn't purchase and ended up buying a place in Vermont where the taxes are reasonable. You are not taking into account owners who do not rent out their places. Locals can no longer afford these taxes and no one wants to buy a place that is over-taxed, decreasing home values. How sad. The lake is beautiful, but too costly to purchase on--due to the TAXES! Taxes on Lake George are more reasonable. We are not rich--a teacher and a factory worker whose dream to own lakefront came true through hard work and determination. Too bad it couldn't have been on beautiful Trout Lake. Please rethink the way you tax up there in the North Country. I know a couple of reasonably priced places up there haven't sold for years on the market--they are nice places--it's the TAXES!! That is why people buy to rent the properties--the average person cannot afford the taxes. I know locals who finally sold because of this.

Oh and by the way, it costs 5.00 at the private boat launch to access the lake. I also understand there is a walking trail from the State Park that leads to a nice sandy beach area. No one is keeping you off the lake!
taxed higher thanks

Nice that some of you can run your mouth when you don't even know the whole story. Some of these properties have been in families since the early 1900's, pasted down for generatons. You have no idea how bad this hurts these families.

Can't feel sorry for these people even if property has been in family for years. Many of them own property they inherited or bought very cheaply. They benefit from the lake greatly, and many of them have an air about them because they own property on the great Trout Lake.

Sounds like you need an assessor who does fair valuation across the board and maybe not just the lake folks (regardless of the lake). Was looking at a Trout Lake property but was turned off by the taxes. It is not Skaneateles Lake for goodness sakes.
