"LANDLORDS WARY

The federal sequester is not the only challenge for Kramer in his mission to house 180 of the most medically vulnerable homeless people in Santa Cruz County.

He's also facing a tight rental market and a shortage of willing landlords.

"For whatever reason, many landlords don't want to accept Section 8 vouchers," he said.

Rental demand is high, with thousands of UC Santa Cruz students living off-campus, renting entire homes in groups of three, four and more, and paying more than most two-earner households.

The situation has been exacerbated by homeowners-turned-renters with 3,500 homes in the county lost to foreclosure.

Kramer looks for potential rentals on Craigslist.com and on www.GoSection8.com but often comes up empty.

Friday, Go Section8.com listed 18 rentals in Watsonville, eight in Aptos, five in Santa Cruz, one in Capitola and none in Scotts Valley."

Wonder why this is? Are section 8 people less likely to be responsible tenants? Also funny that Colby, who probably came to SC as a UCSC student, is now section 8 bound, kept there by the very housing situation that UCSC creates. Welcome to Santa Cruz, you can get indoctrinated here, but then you gotta leave less you got cash flow....
