Worth Township Resident Survey

This letter is in regards to the "2007 Worth Township Resident Survey" form that was mailed to me along with my property tax bill. For the past several years my family and I have enjoyed being part time residents of Worth Township. According to our tax code, my home in Worth is classified as a "non-homestead." This means my tax bill reflects a higher millage than those permanent residents whose homes are classified as "homestead." I have often thought it unfair that I don't get to vote in local elections nor on millage issues that have a direct bearing on my wallet.

Even so, I was never so dismayed as when I received the "2007 Worth Township Resident Survey." It asks residents to take an "anonymous" survey that will give "consent for the Worth Township Planning Commission to use this information in the Township's master plan." It goes on to say, "Your responses will help set goals and priorities for the Worth Township community." At first I thought, "Finally, an opportunity to participate in community affairs at my adopted home."

It seems as if trying to find out how the people feel on different issues is a laudible goal. And I am certain those who put this survey together have the best of intentions. However, this survey seems to start with the assumption that even as "State revenue sharing is being cut," there is some huge "demand for services increasing." The survey then goes on to ask questions concerning prioritizing services, spending and even raising taxes. No where did I see a question such as, "Should the township concentrate on living within it's means?" Let alone, "should the township concentrate on cutting taxes?"

In addition, the anonymous survey is set up in such a way that is all too easy for those not considering the best interests of the community to send in as many responses to the survey as they choose. How is this fair to anyone? Is this the best we can expect from our township? I guess I am back to square one, taxation without representation.
