Two things. That's a cheap shot to distort a Marc Tonnesen's active role in the lives of his kids. I applaud Marc for that ... an example more should follow. The second is get your reality straight. The assessor does not control how the supervisors spend money. He only assesses property fairly, which Marc has done superbly. What we don't need is somebody who thinks the truth can be rolled back like assessed values will things are going tough. Vote for Marc!

Mr. Thacker is running an ad on the front page of the DR today in which he promises things the assessor-recorder, simply, is not authorized to do. Is he running for Assessor - Recorder or County Supervisor? This campaign is starting to smell.

How about some real information about these candidates? Like for example their political party affiliation, what candidates or measures they have contributed to in the past, etc.

By the way, does the county assessor actually do anything? Or does he just sign checks for people in the office who do all the work?

I'm suspicious. Mr. Thacker had signs all over the place before they were allowed to be up and is spending a lot of money on this campaign for a very small office. What does he really want?

There is a difference between an assessor and an appraiser. Assessors are elected and employ appraisers. Assessor is a management position. Is Mr. Thacker an elected Assessor or is he an appraiser?
The incumbent is a native of Solano County; so are his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. That would make his children fifth-generation residents of Solano County. What is so unusual about a young man graduating from high school, going off to college, obtaining employment in a neighboring county and, ultimately, returning to the place of his roots? If he were living in San Joaquin County (many Solano County residents commute to Stockton) of course he would pay his taxes there. Are you suggesting he is doing something illegal like living outside the county he is supposed to live in? If so, say so and let’s find out.
The Assessor does NOT have the authority to cut county spending unless he happens to be able to effect a saving in his own department. One possibility, I suppose, would be to cut assessments as a matter of policy. This would only reduce county operating funds and trigger an over-all tax increase once the Board of Equalization discovered the practice. They review assessments annually in an attempt to equalize them statewide.
The incumbent is probably younger than the challenger but the incumbent has four years of experience as County Recorder, which the challenger is unable to claim.
I have heard no complaints about the performance of the incumbent over the last four years. The only grievances seem to have come about since the challenger has decided he wants the job.
The preponderance of signage for the challenger bothers me. It implies that either he is rich or he has big money behind him. I wonder who is paying for all those signs and why.
I suppose all of the above can be boiled down to one simple point:“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

In the last sentence above, you can tell what it is supposed to say. The Reporter computers don't seem to know how to decipher it. What you see in message 5 is not what I sent.

Check your facts anthony baby. There is a court case "McGuire vs City of American Canyon," which says that a public agency that allows any signs -- real estate, cookie sales, anything -- on its property cannot prohibit campaign signs. Didn't read the Reporter when they corrected their story???

How do you know that the incumbent "assesses property fairly, which Marc has done superbly." Ask the people that he assessed. The county tells the Assessor, how much money they need this year for the operation of the county and Markie boy goes out and assesses to get them the money they need. He is just a puppet who does not live in the county. He may be 10th generation Solanian but he does not live here and can not hold an elected office. Oust the incumbent. I am voting for Thacker

Wrong! The county, and other taxing agencies, levy tax rates against the assessments which are supposed to be as equal and fair as possible. The problem is appraisal is an inexact science. Just because an appraiser says a property is worth a certain amount (usually based on other sales in the area) doesn't mean that is what the property actually sells for. Once it sells, Prop. 13 kicks in and the sale price is the new assessment which will be raised 2% every year until it sells again. I would still like to hear where the incumbent really lives. Can anyone produce an address?

I have searched the every source I can, and I can not locate a party for Mr. Thacker. Does anybody know it? on a side note, his comments and attacks on the current dude seem a bit out of line.

The assessor's position should be non-partisan unless you want things like they are in Chicago where there have to be TWO appraisers to do the appraisal on your house: one a republican and one a democrat.

Remove all of your campaign signs except for one, in any area where signs are legally allowed, and then you will not look like such a bully. As it is, the story of your tantrums over sign placement make you look rude and emotionally immature.
