Freightliner wanted Mooresville site, but incentives lacking, mayor says

There are 14 comments on the Charlotte.com story from Nov 2, 2007, titled Freightliner wanted Mooresville site, but incentives lacking, mayor says. In it, Charlotte.com reports that:

“Our whole incentives package couldn't match what South Carolina was offering. The financials of this particular project didn't meet the cost-benefit formula of the N.C. Department of Commerce”

Freightliner LLC wanted to transfer 341 white collar jobs from its Portland, Ore., headquarters to Mooresville next summer, but state officials couldn't come up with enough incentive money to beat South Carolina for the project, Mooresville Mayor Bill Thunberg told the Observer today.

The company also planned to create nearly 500 additional jobs and develop one of several 200- to 300-acre parcels under consideration, the mayor said.

Freightliner's search for land in the Charlotte region has fueled speculation it will eventually move its headquarters to the region to be closer to several of its plants, including its largest facility in the Rowan County town of Cleveland. Read more

THE MAYOR, AND OR TOWN OFFICIALS ALWAYS BLAME OTHERS FOR THEIR SHORTFALLS IN WHATEVER THEY DO.
IF THE STATE IS AT FAULT, THEN TOM OFFICIALS SHOULD MAKE IT AS ATTRACTIVE AS NEEDED WITH TAX BREAKS AND WHATEVER ELSE IT TAKES TO GET THEM HERE. ONE MORE SOB STORY FROM THE MAYOR, OF COURSE JUST BEFORE THE ELECTION, SO HE WANTA PEOPLE TO THINK HE WAS SO VALIANTLY INVOLVED WITH THE WHOLE PROCESS.

Actually from a source within Freightliner, one aspect of concern was the capicity of the surrounding roads in the Mooresville area. Roads like I-77, Route 21 and 115 can't meet the current demands and when requested, the lack of 5 year plan to address this concern helped steer the decision towards South Carolina.

Can't wait to send him packing...Mooresville has such great potential but over the last two years nothing has happened. Oh except we bought a 75 million dollar cable company. Great. :(

well, we're stuck with him for another two years. let's see what more messes he can get us in, and spend more money to take his entourage to germany.

if he made sense, germany would be the least of our worries. but he and his rader buddies have this town by the testicles, and i guess until they sqeeze our testes real hard, then maybe people will go out and vote.

Hmmmmm....will our taxes go up AGAIN in the next two years??? When will the public wake up? Mayor Cable's margin of victory has been cut down though.....maybe next time we can run him out...if we can still afford to live here for 2 more years.

I've lived here in Mville for 10 years, moved here as a tax refugee from Charlotte (I grew up there). Mooresville seems to want to make the same mistakes, and the state is no help at all. They have the worst transportation planning structure I have ever heard of.
I don't need an incentive to stay here, I just need basic, high-quality services without paying 5K a year (my current tax bill) for them. My Biz is portable and I can go anywhere.
I go to SC all the time on business, so
I see how quickly they finish a tranport project. Then I see the same projects take decades in NC, and the same headaches I saw in the 90's are still around, and worse, today. I may go to SC, too.
You can bet the local F-liner people were asked about these issues, and they are not the only companies aware.

Oh, and by the way, when my wife and I voted at !!!6:00 PM!!! yesterday, we were numbers 26 and 27. It appears nobody cares very much, and that is also a bad sign.

I voted at 7a and was number 31.......my precinct had over 600 people vote....mostly people who've been here their entire life and think Mayor Cable is just doing a great job.
I'd just like a year where my taxes DIDN'T GO UP.

this is the sad part of the whole thing. 17,500 registered voters in mooresville. 14% showed up at the polls. shame on you, shame on you!!!!!
there will always be status quo unless people get out there to vote and take back our town.

some of the more affluent poeple could care less cause their money can see them through, higher taxes, deplorable water and sewer charges, and our newly acquired cable company. the rest of those who don't vote, have this attitude that it doesn't matter, and stay home.

we need to start now for the next coming election to try and make a difference. i'm available to do whatever you all think might work and you can reach me at [email protected]
