Ex-Roane judge says he's 'paid debt' for extortion

Feb 16, 2011 Full story: Knoxville News Sentinel 27

A disgraced former Roane County General Sessions judge who served federal prison time for extortion wants his citizenship rights restored, stating in a petition that he's "fully paid his debt to society." But Roane County District Attorney General Russell Johnson said Wednesday that he is opposing the petition filed on behalf of Thomas Alva Austin.

I think former Judge Austin has fully paid his debt to society. And I respectfully request AG Johnson not to oppose the position to allow Austin to get his citizenship rights restored. Since Austin's sentence he has not had any lapses in judgement to my knowledge. So let him return to society. I believe Austin can be a productive citizen.

I think FORMER judge Austin, has not shown responsibility for his actions, has not shown remorse for his actions, and certainly should not have citizenship rights restored. I plead with the honorable Johnson, who is honorable, to oppose his request. Serving as a JUDGE, Austin was judging other citizens of his area and he very clearly did not live up to even the standards of a CITIZEN, much less a JUDGE of citizens. Austin was convicted and pleaded guilty to only what was very obvious and other crimes perpetrated upon the citizens while he held his office went unreported. The only thing is is remorseful about is being caught. I ask that his citizenship be not only denied this year but also in many years to come.

Wasn't his penalty as a felon to lose his rights to vote, carry a concealed weapon and other things?
Sorry Judge, you might have served your "Country Club" jail time, but that is not all that your penalty carries. Serve ALL of your sentence, not just your your incarceration.

He should be given the same "rights" as any other felon in this state! Other felons have a terrible time getting jobs, renting apartments, looked upon as "worthless" by other citizens AND OUR COURTS! Bet if Austin is pulled over for any reason by a police officer he will not be pulled out of his car, handcuffed, yelled at, searched thru any database to see if he has any outstanding warrants and generally treated as less than a human being. It happens to my friends husband all the time and he has "served his time" and lived a straight life since release from prison years ago!

AUSTIN should have those "same rights"! IMO he should be thankful that he was not ratted out by his "friends" for other illegal activities (IMO) that were brushed under the rug!

Please do NOT give this person who used and abused his power to commit illegal acts without a care in the world what hardships he imposed on others who have to live with that the rest of their lives.

IMO most of you know the real story on Austin!

Just one comment. Federal prison time is not a "country club" as the general public thinks. You need to serve time before you make those statements. Medical care is rendered by unqualified, often unlicensed personnel. There is no education other than a GED program taught primarily by inmates.

Guess you didn't have friends in high places when you were in federal prison. I say that based in your comment "You need to serve time before you make those statements". Austin was released to a "halfway house" shortly after he was remanded to prison. He also had alot of money. Things are just a bit different for those with friends in the system and money, wouldn't you say?

So? What are you saying, that federal prison should have stellar health care and offer advanced degrees? "Judge" Thomas Austin affected the lives of many, many people in Roane County. He does not deserve to released from prison much less be allowed his citizenship rights. This is just another example of him feeling that the laws apply to others and not him. He is just very smug and self-satisfying, which is probably just as well because I doubt he will ever have anyone other than himself from now on so he might as well be in LOVE with himself. Even being in a relationship with himself will be a waste of Viagra.

Austin was many reasons that Daniel Hampton got by with a lot that he did. As long as he had Austin around his finger, he never worried. Austin knows well what he has done, and will do it again. RIGHTS RESTORED??? Who's going to restore Faye's rights??? She is safe and secure now, don't have to worry about Austin or Daniel.

Omega,

I forgot to ask you..... were you involved in any of that stuff with Judge Austin back before Sheriff Stockton took office.

Are you trying to "repair" Roane County reputation and cover up any of your prior involvement or knowledge of with Judge Austin's dealings.... by now lying and trumping-up charges to get 20 years or life sentences to make you look like you are so clean? Hmmm, do you also have some very dangerous tactics to get these convictions, like getting wormen killed?

Roane County drug enforcement and all police officers.... where were you all during the Judge Austin and Daniel Hampton Days. Your need to repair all your reputations should not include filing false and trumped-up charges on "black" men in order to make it look like you all hate drugs and are fighting the war on drugs. No man should have to spend life in prison on a drug charge that was so trumped up and lied about using criminal tactics that get women killed. Omega, haven't you learned your lesson after all that you did to Faye Hampton with your threats and promises?

And you did the same thing to other women to get trumped up charges to repair all the cover-up that you were involved in on the Hampton case. Plea deal????? What didn't you want that case to go to trial Omega, you corrupt Roane County Cop.
I'll tell you why. You did not want anything exposed about your behavior to come out in a Hampton trial on murder or drugs. Did you Omega?

Well, what you did to O'Neal will be exposed, and your corrupt career is over!

Now, I think I'll that D.A.'s office again soon and check on that false murder charge and trial date.

Judege Austin... where are you? Does anyone known where Judge Austin is. The FBI needs to sit down with that guy and get some info from him and not cover it up. But REPORT IT to the media for a change. You all lie to the media all the time to cover up your corruption. Citizens are the only ones taking responsibility for their actions, and sometimes citizens are deliberately lied about to the media by the cops. Just like this lie about Austin to the media. The cops knew that he was guilty of far more than he was charged with.

Cover-up and corruption!

Oh No Austin! You should be treated just like every other ex-con once he/she has "paid their debt to society".

1. You can't vote
2. Every time you get stopped in a license check you get to be treated like dirt by the cops because you're a criminal
3. When a potential employee see's you had a felony kiss that job bye-bye
4. Forget getting foodstamps or housing help - YOU ARE A BAD PERSON!
5. How do you like it now austin?

You are right!

But Austin wasn't the only corrupt one. In fact, the very people denying Austin his rights back are the same ones who sought to cover-up what Austin really back then that never got exposed.

Kickbacks from traffic schools and some money laudering? Give me a break! Far more than that was going on back then. So why did Austin only get charged with these two petty crimes? I'll tell you why! Roane County did not want the embarrassment or all the other corrupt official to go down with Austin! Judge Austin was the one that got "thrown under the bus". I am not defending him, but the corrupt even get treated corruptly when they all fear getting exposed. That's where the fall guy comes in! Judge Austin was the fall guy, and even then he got off easy.

And he put up with being thrown under the bus by his corrupt good-old-boys because he agreed to keep quiet about their behavior in exchange for on a few years in prison vs. much more for what was really going on.

Ask yourselves, why was Austin allowed to remain on the bench after that Cocaine possession arrest in Florida? And why did Roane County officials cover that up? Because they all cover-up for each other's corruption... well up to a point. Austin was getting too careless, and they had to throw him under the bus before he ruined it for all of them.

That D.A., Russel Johnson, now acts all self righteous and denies Austin his rights back. Based on what I am finding out about Johnson's activities, he should be thrown in jail far longer than Austin in my opinion. Filing false indictments and overseeing fixed grand juries on a black man not guilty of murder... is a slap in the face in light of Daniel Hampton being made to plea out on a 1st degree murder charge to 2nd degree murder in order to keep Roane County's corruption from being exposed in a trial. Did Russell Johnson have anything to do with the Hampton plea deals? If Ralph O'Neal goes to trial on Boone Cofer murder, all this has to come out. This may be the only way the truth about what Roane County did to Faye Hampton and Boone Cofer will ever come out. The very thing they did to cover-up this corruption may be the very thing that will expose it.

When is that murder trial for Boone Cofer's murder, Roane County? We are waiting!

The family of Faye Hampton may want to plan on staying in the loop on that false murder against O'Neal since it appears it was filed by Roane County officials to cover up the corruption in Roane County surrounding the Daniel Hampton rein during the years leading up to those two August 2007 murders where Det. Kris Mynatt intimidated these two victims to be drug informants for him, and this got them both murdered. Then he sought to cover it all up. I know he hates O'Neal and always has, but for Mynatt and his RC corrupt good-ole-boys to falsely charge O'Neal for murder when they know who really killed Boone and who all was behind it is pretty corrupt ad dark to me. And the D.A. has the nerve to talk about ex-Judge Austin? Corrupt good-ole-boys should be arrested and jailed! Can we get someone on that FBI or TBI? Where are you all anyway? Are you all a part of this corruption or just afraid of it? Just wondering?
