Ron did not dive headfirst into shallow water. He was goofing around, we think, when he ran out onto the dock. We, his friends, believe that he could not stop when he reached the end of that short dock.
He apparently was unable to stop after stepping into an area that had otting boards and was shaky. He fell headfirst.
He did not dive with his hands in front of him, and his head up. His hands and head were down. His body followed his head down into the water.
His best friend witnessed him go in like that.
At the bottom of the lake, where Ron hit his head, there is wood, apparently debris that floated there over the years.
This could well explain why Ron got such a bad head injury. That apparently caused him to drown, according to the autopsy report and officials. He also had a broken neck, but it was not so bad that he could not survive, nor would he have been paralyzed, a sheriff's investigator said.
Ron's friend, Dave Carlson, got him out of the water within 30 seconds after he floated up, and someone with respiratory gear drove by within five minutes, and tried to help. But Ron could not be resuscitated.
He was a natural athlete in football, wrestling and boxing, and who won top honors in school and the military from which he retired as an Army Reserves major. He knew what he was doing. He did not dive. We strongly believe that he fell in, and that's what the evidence indicates.
