Why is that all government officials and officers, sheriffs or deputies are put on administrative leave instead of being suspended without pay when they break the law? Any other citizen would have gone to jail for something like that, had their photo plastered everywhere and been ostrasized.

Well, if you don't live in Iowa, then you don't know how police departments react to thiings here. John is a good guy and shouldn't be judged for this! Actually, this incident would have never made news had he not been a sherriff! He deserves his privacy along with everyone else in the world! Give him and his family a break!

He shouldn't be judged for this??? Since when is it acceptable for domestic assault to be overlooked? We are all judged by our actions and that action is UNACCEPTABLE, sheriff or not. He is supposed to be a role model for fellow citezins.

Well to the two out of staters. Im a police officer and I too understand that something might of went wrong. Ever heard of innocent until proven guilty? yeah so he is innocent as of right now. He is on Admin. leave because he hasnt been convicted of this crime yet. John is a nice guy and I also think something is a little fishy. He will be tried just like everyone else. and as for his picture being plastered, It is confidental because of his undercover work.

Ever notice that whenever a cop gets a DUI, it's almost ALWAYS at least a minor crash/accident ie, non-cop witnesses?

Think about it

No public witnesses, no DUI if it's a cop

Abuse is Abuse!!!!! Nobody knows what goes on in someone else's house. If you weren't there, you don't know exactly what happened. If he was arrested for putting a gun to her, HE IS WRONG!!!!
Nobody has the right to hold a gun to someone else. I know John and his wife. I've always thought the world of them, until now!!! John had no right to do that. Stress or not, cop or not, I don't care!!! He had no right to do that!!! She and her kids will have to live with that forever!!! People make mistakes, but we have to pay for our mistakes too!!! He will have to pay for this mistake. Hopefully, he will feel horrible about it and get counseling.....,but it will be a long process. The kids and his wife will have to get help too. It is unforgivable what he did. He needs help!!! I pray they will all be ok and be able to heal from all of this soon. I'm so sorry this happened!!!! You're all in my prayers!!!!!!!

He shouldnt be judged for this? Good guy? Whenever a husband or boyfriend pulls out a gun, under any circumstance, it is nothing short of attempted murder, because that is the way the victim feels. But yet this good guy is being paid and has only been charged with two misdameanors. Have we forgot about all the women victims this year, that were killed on a whim? He pulled a gun and that is all that we need to know.

Not everything is being told on the news. I also know both John and Tricia. They are good people but Tricia, not John, is the emotionally unstable person. I have seen it myself. Something doesn't seem right here. It's not fair to call this man an abuser when he isn't. And for those that are saying he pulled a gun...that's the allegation, not fact. So many times, when a marriage is falling apart, one party will make fictitious statements in order to get the other person out of the house. Looks like it worked for her.

First of all, many officers have 'demons', inherited from the job that they do. Some of the officers forget how to separate their job from their home life. Many times, the spouses of officers are subject to this type of abuse, but it is never reported. I am surprised that the officers in Altoona actually reported this and took action, because so often, they tend to 'cover up' the actions of their buddies. For those of you who are not familiar with domestic abuse, it is not like this just happened one day and the spouse called the cops. It has been on going and the other one finally mustered up the courage to call as I am positive this is not the first time domestic abuse occurred. Now whether or not you want to try either or both of them in a public forum is your decision, but ultimately, it is a decision by 12 of their peers and with the evidence. I suggest you wait until the final decision is handed down before you throw stones at either of them. I am not a friend of either of them, but I have first hand knowledge of this type of incident and the types of people involved. Please pray for the children in this situation and pray that they do not follow in either of their parents footsteps, being an abuser or the passive person who allowed it to happen.

I don't know, maybe because this is America and people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law?

I think the world of Tricia. She helped my young son and our entire family through a most difficult time when a family member passed away. She is a true gem and I pray she will remain safe and justice will be served.

No Disrespect intended, First, an officer should be held to a higher standard. Secondly, if guilty should pay a higher price. Third, It is unexcusable for a man to strike a woman.. No if's, and's, or butt's. The law is the law, and if found guilty, then fine, hope the proper price is paid, and he is ashamed and deals with his issues. If the woman is guilty, then she should pay also. BUT, a man should never strike a woman. And the cop should have known better. PERIOD
