The "conference" (Sandy Valley Conference of Free Will Baptists), does not have the authority to void ANY action taken by ANY church in its association. The autonomy of the local church is a hallmark of Free Will Baptists which means that the local church has the authority to conduct its business and affairs as it sees fit. The ONLY recourse the "conference" has would be to remove the church from its association of member churches, either permanently or indefinitely (until the situation is resolved). Such a move would require some time and following certain procedures. The "conference" could (and should) call the credentials of Rev. Melvin Thompson into question for his actions in this matter. His actions have brought national shame on the Gulnare Church, the Sandy Valley Conference, the KY State Association of Free Will Baptists, the National Association of Free Will Baptists and EVERY Free Will Baptist church in existence today. For this, Rev. Melvin Thompson should at least be reprimanded and probably better yet have his credentials of good standing revoked. This is the ONLY action the Sandy Valley Conference could take that would do anything to help the Gulnare Church. The Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church can only be reconciled with the community by calling Rev. Melvin Thompson into question as to his membership standing in the church and a secret vote taken as to whether to retain him as a member of the church. These actions would be in accordance with Scripture and with the established Faith and Practices of the Free Will Baptist association. This church needs healing and it will only begin after the "surgery" is completed.
