This tragedy happened quite a while ago. I remember this but not sure of the details. He killed a child, not sure if it was his child or a girlfriends child, I believe it was a little girl. It comes to mind that he was on drugs. That he hit her with a guitar or something like that. I know that was vague. It was not a random act and he did not abduct her and murder her. No sexual abuse or anything like that to my recollection It was domestic and I think he was pretty young when it happened, maybe 20's. He came from a decent family. Tragic.

He should be considered very dangerous and a threat to your neighborhood. He brutally murdered a 2 year old girl in front of his other child. He also beat and tortured his family in the years before.

I did ask a few people if they remembered anything about this and they informed me the same as the last two entries. Also that he has threatened family members since his release.

Juding others is not our job, it is up to God to judge all of us. John went to prison for something that he was accused of and tried for, but his wife was also in the home and ran out on her children (2) of them, so therefore, he paid for the crime. It was her word against his. He Spent 23 years behind bars, served his debt to society. If you are worried about living in the same neighborhood, I would not be worried about him hurting anyone. He will more than likely just want to start a new life and forget the past.

if you were from that area... you would know that there is five different stories floating around! I know that this person served his time and also know that you cant judge a person by his cover. There were many people in Pike Co that were willing to sign an affidavit proving his innocence and there was no just trial. Without going into details, remember there are many innocent people out there so be careful who you judge. Something could happen to you because you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. So malicious gossipers don't jump to conclusions before you actually know the whole story.

I grew up in Pike County and remember this case very well. I knew the Eveland family and knew John. This may surprise some of the rumor-mongers but he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. It is widely known by the residents in Pike county that John served a sentence that should have been served instead by his ex-wife. She was a closet coke-fiend that ran with everybody in town while John was working on the road. She never treated Hailey like her own daughter, it was John that shopped for that child's clothes and necessities when he came home off the road. The ex was out partying 3 days after the tragedy occurred. Does that sound like a mother in mourning to you? Over 250 people from the surrounding area wrote letters of recommendation to the court after the state's attorney was overheard saying that "it will just be easier to convict a man than a woman". You say John is dangerous, if you knew all of the facts you would apologize, but you know nothing more than you have read somewhere else. I and many more like me would welcome him into our community anytime. Unfortunately, most would rather believe the lie than search for the truth.

You people have no clue. I Was raised with the family and it was a tragic occurance. But for those of you whom think the mother was to blame your just as sick and twisted as John. The man BRUTALLY KILLED his child.. ENOUGH SAID. There is no excuse for that.. He should have a tattoo across his forehead that says CHILD MURDERER... and it sounds like to me " I agree with Interested" that you are numero uno to be the rumor monger!! He should have never been let out, and people should not have to fear for there children!! God will one day get him for what he has done, and I hope he gets it ten fold........ also "the ones who agree with interested" youre just as sick as John if you think he is innocent. Maybe you all should go get the facts. They dont put innocent baby killers in prison because they THINK he did it.... The man killed his little girl he should be stripped of every right he has and tossed in a barrel to burn in he**!!

Your momma has done a wonderful job raising her kids, and for someone to say she never cared about you kids is ludacris. She loves her babies just as any mother should. Dispite all the other BS, John knows what he did and he is the one whom has to live with that daily. He doesnt deserve to be out int he free world. There was one true statement above...... and that is that God will decide and judge , and one day he will get his.

Yeah, the state of Illinois has NEVER put someone in prison that was later found to be innocent, have they? Well, maybe 15 men from death row that was found to be innocent from all charges by DNA evidence. Tip of the iceberg, but you have no idea what you are talking about. I have went over the facts with several members of the community. Many facts that could not be known by most people that are quick to shout an uninformed opinion. I can only assume that the person that posted this "opinion" has many, many skeletons in their closet that they have to deal with daily. Usually, they are the most critical of others. One may be led to believe that this person may be a "drugged up" friend of the truly guilty party. God will sort it all out, that much is certain. All I can hope is that God will have mercy on us all.

I stumbled upon this site and am very confused. This tragedy happened in 1987? You people are still trying this case in a public forum 23 years later? My advice to all is to "get a life". From what I understand, this man served 23 years in prison, yet one of you wants him in hell. Don't you think 23 years in prison would have been a living hell? Just a reminder, IT IS OVER!! It is now 2010, not 1987. I am 68 years old and diagnosed as terminal. My regrets are solely centered on how I treated my family and friends. Did I tell them enough that I loved them, why did I argue over meaningless things, and what did I do with the gifts that God blessed me with. Believe me when I say that caring what others think or thought of me is no where on my list of priorities. My point is simple, get on with your lives, let this man live what's left of his life and leave the judging to God. Remember too that we all have sinned and fell short. Jesus said that no sin is greater than the other. If we break one commandment it is as if we have broken them all.

No one is arguing what happened. He brutally murdered a 2 year old and only had to serve 23 years in prison. Can you imagine that? A little girl lost her life and he gets out of prison 23 years later. Good thing for the advancement of child abuse laws since then. You people who keep talking about God this and God that, it's your way of justifying your crazy beliefs. A belief that you and about 10 other people still want to ignore the fact that someone you were friends with killed a 2 year old girl. You need to really evaluate yourselves. All the facts are available at the public. I know for a fact that there had been numerous appeals to the case by his family but no lawyer would last longer than a month or so due to the lack of any evidence against anyone but John Eveland.

You are an idiot. Simple as that. You really think that God talk puts you above everyone don't you? You are sticking up for someone who murdered a little girl. If there was a God, I guarantee he would not forgive anyone for that. You can bark your bible quotes up and down this forum while you support a child murderer. 98% of the people involved or in the area at the time knows exactly what happened. This is the age of the internet and people will know the horrors of this holier than thou murderer. "The truly guilty party" is you, the person who did it, the people on here who forget that a 2 year old girl didn't get a chance to grow up and her 3 year old brother watched and grew up without his kid sister. The reason that those two were neglected such opportunities was because John Eveland snapped like he was known to do and brutally beat a little girl to death. Anything else said on here is false. Anyone who comes on here rambling and being accusatory ("drugged up friend of the truly guilty party") and then citing God and Jesus as reasons to justify their crazy beliefs should be treated as misinformed or unable to face the truth.
