If this article has you scratching your head thinking "What the he**?". Now read the article about Ralph Kinkead, a decorated Vietnam Vet who almost died from lung cancer due to the effects of Agent Orange. The man had to sell all of his belongings to feed and house his family, because he could not get the help he deserved in Franklin county. He ended up going to Pickaway county, where he was given the respect and help he needed.I too am a Vietnam Vet and have had the displeasure of dealing with the Franklin County V.A. They are a heartless and cold breed of a**es.And they actually have the audacity to give themselves a raise!!! And to add insult to injury they want it to come from the funds that is set aside to help the veterans they are supposed to represent!! Now I know why so many vets have been turned down..

Thoose Franklin County commisioners should be exposed, tried and convicted, drug thru the streets! What a shame! How can the government,(federal, state, and county) allow such actions and oversight? As a veteran myself, I don't see how this country can allow such corrupt things to happen to its vets. It's a real shame what vets have to go thru to obtain benifets entitled to them thru their service to this country.

The Franklkn County Commissioners need to fire the entire board and staff and replace them with vets who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Do it and do it now or else you're the problem!

Hey Dispatch, instead of dancing around the subject with kid gloves, expose these jerks publicly. Your next publication should have their names and photos in the paper so all of Central Ohio can see what greedy SOB's these people are. The next thing should be for them to either A) take serious paycuts or B) lose their jobs. Either way they should be tried and punished!! What a disgrace!!!!

Actually, according to the article the County Commissioners can't fire the board - they have no direct say over the board's operations, only over their budget.
From the article:
"Elected officials in Franklin County, who control the Veterans Service budget but not its operations"
and
The Veterans Service Commission, established by a Civil War-era law, is guaranteed a cut of county property taxes. But elected officials have little authority over the agency.
The Franklin County Common Pleas Court appoints the five commissioners, who represent military organizations and are appointed to five-year terms. The court can remove a commissioner "for cause" under Ohio law, but the judge must grant a hearing unless there is a criminal conviction involved.
Otherwise, "we have no oversight at all" after board members are appointed, said Judge Guy Reece, the court's administrative judge. Reece does meet with the group occasionally to urge them to follow policy and be consistent.
Judge Charles A. Schneider, who will become administrative judge in January, agreed: "We don't manage, and we have no control over the budget.

I agree with the poster who said those on the Veterans agency should be exposed. This is really poor management and poor treatment of our veterans. It is a shame that veterans cannot obtain the assistance they need because of overbloated bureaucracy and a sense of entitlement by those who should be serving our veterans.

Its time to clean house and replace the entire management team. Then, reduce their salaries to $40,000 per year maximum, which is pretty good income in my view.

I am a Veterans Service Commissioner and I can guarantee you I dont make anywhere near that amount of money. I am paid $250.00 each period (2 weeks) for 20 hours work. I dont disagree theft in office is horrible. Neglecting the needs of Veterans is equally as bad. Veterans deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion. Veterans are NOT asking for handouts just help. I am a Vietnam Veteran 1967-68

Typical government behavior. Fraud and breach of trust with the people they are supposed to serve. they all need to be revealed, and dont let this go away, there will be spin on this and all the games, but the game isnt over until they all pay the price for their corruption.. these criminals need to be brought to justice and exposed. What a disgrace.

Okay, fine. Have the judge fire the entire board 'for cause', whatever that means. He can cite the article. Fine, give them a hearing. Have the county prosecutor grill 'em and embarrass them on the front page of the paper. If they've actually done anything against the law, and I mean anything, charge 'em. Jack their bonds up and keep them in jail before trial. Put them in cells with abusive inmates. Tell 'em this is the fate that awaits them if they don't resign now and leave in disgrace.

So far, everyone seems to have missed the point: We're dealing with a system created 140 years ago. If it's not working, change it! How are these people selected for their jobs? According to the article, they are appointed by a judge, but what does that mean? Does he/she select from a list provided by veteran groups, or do those groups make the selections? Which veteran groups are we talking about? How do they decide? Is it a typical good old boy selection? What are their qualifications? As a fellow vet, I want answers.

These individuals should be fired for abuse of power/authority. Vets need help for food, medical treatment and housing and these idiots are giving themselves huge raises in these economic times. Maybe they should be paid more but not at the expense of those who need the help more. These people at least had good paying jobs and now with these raises have extremely good paying jobs. Where is the sense of comraderie and care of ones fellow service members. These people are greedy and selfish. Put them out of work and let them feel the effects of this economy. Thanks to the surrounding counties who are helping those who truly need it.

Leaders of the Franklin County Veterans Service Commission say the raises are justified.

These are NOT LEADERS, they are no more than self-serving thieves! And, the blame should be on the shoulders of the judge that appoints these thieves!
