serious matter of safety

I would like to bring a serious matter to the attention of the parents of athletes in the Teays Valley School system. On Wed Feb 10th, The county of Pickaway was under a Winter Storm Warning and a level 2 snow emergency as determined by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and the National Weather Service. The stipulations attached to a level 2 emergency are:“roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work”. Schools throughout the county were closed, extra curricular activities were canceled, evening events at the schools were canceled and the coach of the Teays Valley Basketball team decided to call for a practice. My senior, who plays Varsity, was very upset when he was told by his parents that it was too treacherous to drive to the practice. I contacted the athletic director, who was evidently on a snow day because he did not return my call. I contacted the superintendent’s officers who informed me that they allow the coaches to make the decision whether to hold practice on a snow day. Then they referred me to the principle of the high school to voice my discontent. I did receive a call from the coach stating that the team has been instructed to only come to practice if they can do so safely and that if they do not attend they would not be penalized. This is High School athletics and I realize that it is important to the students, community and coaches, but common sense should dictate. I believe it is extremely negligent of the staff, coaches and administrators of a school system to place the children in harms way for an athletic practice. The athletes always want to do what is required to please their coaches and many parents are afraid to speak out against unsafe practices fearing retaliation against their children. Does it take a serious injury or a death of a student to finally have the administrators set policies that help to protect the children?
