Girl, 16, charged with battery on dad after he tries to spank her

A 16-year-old Florida girl who hit her father when he tried to spank her has been charged with misdemeanor domestic battery.

Thanks to programs like DCF kids are out of control: they lie, cheat and steal and now they attack their parents - they feel quite bold about it. Afterall, the schools and DCF tells you...if your parent punishes you...call DCF .. and your problems are solved...

The problem is that parents need to have authority over their kids -which is undermined every day by schools, and DCF who tell them ... parents have no rights at all.... then when the kids are way out of control...they tasor them or they end up in jail...

A little spanking goes a long way when kids are out of line..and helps to assert authority over kids and teaches kids respect... but, no more...

I say we all deliver these kids to DCF and demand they raise them since they created this problem..

I don't believe in beating a child, but a smack on the butt when they're kids generally just hurts their pride. But I don't know, isn't a man going to spank his 16 year old daughter just a bit creepy and weird? Not necessarily saying the kid didn't deserve to get smacked, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit more to this story.

As someone who got many spankings during my childhood, I think this is ridiculous. Especially when the child is 16! The only thing it taught me was to fear and/or hate my father (at the time). It didn't make me respect him more.
As a new parent, I am planning on NOT spanking my child. If she were about to do something to endanger herself, I have no beef w/smacking her hand out of the way. But to hit, just because you can is a really bad idea. What exactly are you teaching your child? I was with a friend (I use that term loosely) and her 2y o son hit her in the chest, she hit him back and then told him to "stop hitting". Um, that doesn't make much sense to me.

Good job, dad, you now placed a record on your own daughter's record. Yea she was wrong for punching you but did you think about the long term effect that this will do to her. This kind of stuff should be handle within the family and maybe with a family counselor and not get the cops involved. Let say she turns her life around and tries to get a job, this record may prevent her from getting one. It also may affect her from getting any scholarships if she chooses to attend college.

I think there is something very strange about a father spanking his 16 year old. I mean it sounds like there might be something else brewing below the surface. Maybe she got fed up with the abuse? I think it's disgusting and disturbing he was spanking a teenager. There are otherways of correcting a behavior, maybe he should be ordered to take child development classes

The part about she was slapped in the face first, then she punched him as he tried to "spank" her. I think there is alot more to the story as well.
The whole family sounds kinda messed up.
As for her having a record, when she is 18 her record is going to be sealed. I do have a problem with him slapping her in the face in the first place.

Of course she tried to punch her father. He's apparently taught her that's the way to solve problems. Why isn't HE busted for child abuse? A father spanking his 16-year-old daughter just seems way too kinky.

I think that if you feel you have to resort to spanking and slapping your 16-yr old to enforce discipline, then you have failed as a parent.

Not saying that 16-yr olds are perfect angels, but at that age other disciplinary measures are more appropriate (curfew, curtailing of other priviledges).

I know this from personal experience--I received a pretty vicious slap from my mother at age 15. We were arguing over some issue involving my brother--my mom, as usual, was taking his side. I was very upset and crying, when my mother up and slapped me across the face.

(No, I did not retaliate--though I'll admit I sorely wanted to.)

My stunned teenaged self asked her: "Why did you do that to me?"
Her response: "You were hysterical."
My response: "So, you would just slap anyone who is upset? Even someone you didn't know?"
Her response: "You're grounded, go to your room. I don't want to talk about this any more."

Look, my mom wasn't beating us daily. But she had her own psychological issues (like always needing to be right, irregardless of situation) that made parenting teenagers a big problem. That slap was the icing on a nasty cake--it just confirmed that I had lost all respect for her as my parent. I loved her, but the way she treated me made it impossible for me to grow up from a snarky teenager to a functional adult in her care.

The long and short of it was that I eventually went to live with relatives after an "intervention" by our pastor. This was the best thing that could of happened to our family. Only until I was in my late 20's could I finally confront my mother about this episode (and others)--her unconditional apology was key to us mending the rift. But I would be lying to you if I said it doesn't hurt me a lot to think back to those days some 20+years later(in fact, I'm crying as I type this.).

I hope this father and daughter can get the help they obviously need, and a family can be saved a lot of pain and heartache. God watch over this family in their time of need.

Here's my guess. Dad threatened to take cell phone away (teens can't possible live without texting) she cussed at him--he slapped her--then things got out of hand.

OK, Number 1 - Spanking your 16 year old... bad idea. Number 2 - As a father of a daughter, there's more to this story, as in - how come the police arrived? Who called them, the father or the daughter? Number 3 - If your 16 year-old daughter is punching you in the face, it's too late to start disipline. Number 4 - A wise father would take away cell phones and cars and going out with friends, not spanking.
