I don't smoke.
Greg, as a "non smoker" yourself, what exactly are you suggesting that your fellow non-smokers rely upon instead of science?Non smokers if you are going to totally rely on science I wish you luck with your own health.

Judged: 2 2 2 Just re-establishing the point that 195,000 people die from hospital ( a place of science) error each year. That is just shy of half of the number that die from smoking. I think I would try to find my own solution and have faith in myself.I guess that is easier said than done but in the end it is what probably works. |

It's a bit of a jump from "science" to "hospital", but I'll go with you. What you are expressing is a Christian Scientist belief --- that we can heal ourselves, and medical intervention is unnecessary. The real test of the sincerity this belief comes when you break a leg. Will you go to a hospital, or "find your own solution"? |

Judged: 1 1 1 I have had illnesses far worse than a broken leg and I did go to the hospital. I survived and on one occasion I would attribute their intervention with saving my life. On another when others would say they saved my life I feel that I received an intervention that was un-necessary and ten years later it also became the opinion of medicine in general. I am not a person of religious faith so did not have the faith, or courage, to just dismiss medicine ( which I see as a science practiced in hospitals amongst other places) at that time and I was much younger at that time. Those who have died,195,000 each year, cannot speak about their experiences. Thus they have not posted the comments that I did. An example might be a child who was given a saline drip after coming in with a known large ingestion of salt, or a child given an adult's dose of medication instead of one appropriate to their size/weight. The point is that science is far from infallible and also tends to go off in different directions than it started in,or, at least modified versions. People use to be kept in bed for weeks after many surgeries and suddenly it was declared that these people were far more prone to strokes etc so they got everyone moving. Or, one stayed in the hospital longer because they might hemorrhage and need urgent treatment/care. Now the, supposed, fear of infection has everyone's stay shortened to just a few days in most cases and more lesser surgeries being done in day surgery. A dramatic shift. I don't support, or reject, the arguments but I have to throw in that shorter stays could be motivated by the cost of hospitalizing patients and keeping them hospitalized or bed shortages unintentionally. |
This is the beauty of science. It doesn't claim to be infallible. All ideas are subject to being tested. Sometimes what was conventional wisdom is demonstrated to be wrong.(Phrenology is an example of a theory that turned out to be wrong and was discarded.) This is how science evolves. |

Judged: 1 1 1 That sounds good and there is truth in that. The problem begins when it looses sight of that or when individuals who represent it do. That seems to happen far too often and the consequences serious. An example of that would be the release of a new drug to the public. It may have only been tested on 200 individuals directly and then moved into the companies sample boxes and pharmacies. A doctor writes a woman a prescription for thalidomide. The conventional "wisdom" supports that. As you state when it is wrong it is discarded ( or there are modifications ). It is called closing the door after the horses have bolted. |
