.....and this will happen again and again and again until personal transportation gets the smarts installed to evaluate who's trying to start it up, say "you're OK" and let it happen or say "you're on something (drugs \ alcohol \ stupidity \ cell phone), I'm not going to let you operate me." The drunker you get the less you're able to reason. The dude blew a .23, that's REALLY F'd up. Where did he get drunk? No one tried to stop him? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure no one held a gun to his head and poured whisky down his throat (North by Northwest), but .23? He had to be exhibiting signs of intoxication. Maybe he drank alone, I have no idea, but mark my words, as long as the sale of alcohol remains legal and we rely on the judgment of INTOXICATED people to determine whether they're OK to drive this kind of thing is going to happen. People don't realize what a chance they're taking when they drive drunk. Three people dead and a 25 year old kid's life is ruined. There is a technological solution to this but no doubt we're not going to see it for another 10 years or so. Until then the dying will continue.

Professor,
I totally disagree with you. Since when did we stop taking responsibility for ourselves? Why should we have to rely on a device instead of good old common sense? He made the choice and he got behind the wheel and he took 3 innocent lives. He ruined his own life. Dont try to put the blame on anything else. This should have never happened. The laws need to get tougher. He should rot in jail for the rest of his life. Dont make excuses for him or anyone like him.

What excuse did I make? This guy is looking at 9 to 30 years behind bars, I would like to see the people who let him drive drunk get TWICE THAT. Toughening the laws will not prevent this from happening again. When a person has a .23 BAC they are not capable of making a rational decision. Do you drink at all? If you do not then you would probably be in favor of another era of prohibition, but didn't history show that really doesn't work? If you do drink you would have to understand that a .23 drunk would have a hard time walking as opposed to driving.....and the whole time they would be staggering to their car they would be thinking they were 10ft tall and bullet proof. No, we could run MADD commercials 24-7 and you and I would be no safer on the road. The technology exists to render vehicles incapable of operating if the operator is not capable. I do respect your opinion, but don't you see how we expect people who are drugged to make a clear headed decision? Maybe you're right to a degree, I guess a madatory 5 year sentence and 10 year loss of license for a DUI would keep some people from driving drunk but you'll always have that one or two who think that they won't get caught, or as probably in this guys case too hammered to even care. Thanks for responding, be careful if you have to go anywhere Weds.
